Plans for a mosque to be built in Manhattan near World Trade Center site.
article from CNN:

Article

"The time for a center like this has come because Islam is an American religion. We need to take the 9/11 tragedy and turn it into something very positive." - Daisy Khan, executive director American Society for Muslim Advancement.

Islam is an American relgion? I thought it was an Arabic religion.

And how is a mosque going to turn 9/11 into something positive?

I would be shocked if people of New York let this happen. IMHO this would be a mockery.

But how could the people of NYC stop it? The Muslim Advancement owns the land and there are no zoning changes in the building plans.

Eh. There are probably churches near there, right? I mean, they're not talking about building a mosque on top of GZ or anything.

How things like this are a serious issue to anyone is beyond me.

Largest population of Muslims is in Indonesia. It is a world religion, well established in the US. I'm sure there are far more Muslims than there were Christians in 1776.

Shall we kick the churches out of Oklahoma City on account of Timothy McVeigh?

Nobody would complain this much if they were to build an airplane museum or something there.

Not every Muslim is a terrorist you know

Islam has Arabic roots which makes it far more an Arabic religion than Indonesian or American.

Good thing Christianity originated in the USA then, huh?

Otherwise, your argument wouldn't make a lot of sense.

Insofar as I don't really think of wasting real estate on any religious building as a good idea, this seems like a better idea for one than most others.

My point is that who cares where it's rooted? It's not like Christianity started in Alabama. Are you suggesting that churches shouldn't be allowed near the World Trade Center site as well because Christianity doesn't have American roots?

Yes, proportionally, there are more Christians in the US than Muslims, but I don't really see why that matters. Americans' right to peacefully practice their religion is in the First Amendment and the fact that a group of religious extremists crashed a couple planes into the WTC doesn't change that.

No, I have not suggested that a mosque shoud or should not be built near Ground Zero.

Actually, I questioning why Daisy Kahn states that "Islam is an American religion" and why she believes building a mosque near GZ will turn 9/11 into a positive outcome.

I'm not comfortable speaking on behalf of Daisy Kahn. If you want clarification on what she says or believes, you're going to have to take it up with her.

I'm no longer following what the purpose of your OP was. Are you asking us if we agree with Daisy Kahn stance or are you hoping that Daisy Kahn will read your post and reply to you?

"It will have a real community feel, to celebrate the pluralism in the United States, as well as in the Islamic religion," Khan said. "It will also serve as a major platform for amplifying the silent voice of the majority of Muslims who have nothing to do with extremist ideologies. It will counter the extremist momentum."

I assume by saying "Islam is an American religion" she meant that there are Americans that are Muslim.

Doesn't freedom of religion mean all religions are American religions?

Yes that can be said and possibly even valid.

But I am not sure that the populace as a whole agrees are even believes Islam is "American"

That is what she said, of course, but how many people in NYC are going to feel welcome to that center?

I don't think it was worded well. It's one of the religions practiced in America, so it's one of the American religions. Or "Islam is an American religion (but also an Arabic religion and a European religion and...)"

I think it's pretty dicey.
