If you have Alzheimer's disease and forget about Jesus - Do you go to heaven?*

My Answer: Yes

What's your opinion?

* Pat Robertson's recent comments on Alzheimer's gave me the idea for the thread.

What if there is no heaven?

Hypothetically speaking, though, I'm going to say yes also. Otherwise God is mean.

Absolutely not. Hell is filled with Alzheimers patients.

Do you also have Alzheimer in the afterlife? lol

Bonus question : If God cures your Alzheimer/deformities/other diseases once you get to heaven, why can't he do it while you're still on Earth?

Edit :

Other questions related to the OP :

Say a middle aged man is involved in an accident and suffer permanent brain damage, but manage to survive for 20+ years and eventually die of natural causes: is he still a ****** in heaven?

Is there any difference to what happens if the damage is done during childhood instead of middle age, so that there is no "backup point" available, only wasted potential?

Of the comments that have popped out of his mouth, do you not agree that this is pretty reasonable?

Uh, no. Jesus I'm an atheist and would never abandon someone I loved like that. But that's the beauty of religion, I guess. Since no one can talk to the invisible man himself, you get to make it up as you go along. Wanna ditch an ailing spouse? No problem. Just imply that god thinks it's okay. Nobody can prove he said it's not. ftw.

I agree these are important questions and I'm interested to hear what theists think.

I have some similar questions.

(1) What age are you in the afterlife? If you die a 4-year-old, do you forever have the (resurrected or whatever) body and mind of a 4-year-old? (Another somewhat off-topic point: at what point in physical development is the soul 'inserted' in the body? This would also solve some abortion issues).

(2) If you never develop language, for example due to brain damage or social isolation (including 'raised by wild dogs' scenarios), and thus never have the capacity to understand religious concepts, do you still have a shot at the afterlife?

(3) Why do all humans have a shot at attaining eternal life merely for the fact of being human? Can't god also implant souls in other creatures that have highly developed nervous systems and are capable of love, suffering, and morality (such as my dog)?

btw I find it extraordinary that 5 people are prepared to say that if you suffer a neurodegenerative disease that makes it impossible for you to even have the option of believing in Jesus, then heaven is out of bounds. What's the explanation here? Did god punish such people by giving them Alzheimer's himself?

imo voting 'no' itt because you are atheist and don't believe in heaven amounts to trolling. Such a response is answering a different question; it's pretty obvious the question assumes the existence of heaven.

There are way more people who have answered in the poll already than there are theists on this board.

Who said abandon? He explicitly said the opposite.

not really. for an immoral and hedonistic atheist who wants to disobey god cause they hate him, sure, perfectly reasonable. completely unreasonable if you subscribe to the so-called "Christian" way of life.

Well, I guess we will just have to disagree then. I happen to subscribe I guess to an exent to the so-called "christian" way of life and I feel it is perfectly reasonable.

I hate Pat Robertson with a passion, but I don't find what he said to be all that ridiculous.

He's not recommending that a person should abandon a spouse who develops Alzheimer's. He specifically stated that you should ensure that your spouse is provided for and cared for. His argument was that since the person you married is (for all intents and purposes) "gone", you should be able to seek happiness with another by remarrying. You shouldn't have to wait until your spouse physically dies to do so.

What's unreasonable about that?

I hate Pat too. I read what he had said and it made me think of the question for this thread.

I don't agree with what he said because when you take your vows for marriage - you say " for richer or poorer, in sickest and in health till death do you part ".............so Pat's wrong.......
