Nothingness, defined as 'a state-of-affairs such that no thing is possible,' puts us in the position of denying the actual existence of things. For, if actuality entails possibility, then a state of affairs such that no thing is possible is not possible.
Thomistic metaphysics, which I favor, resolves this seeming paradox. Thomism allows one to hold on to the conceivability of 'a state of affairs such that no thing is possible' by denying the property of actual existence to things and instead posits a sort of universal existence in which things exist by virtue of. With Thomism, a thing does not
actually exist; it is
in existence (God).
