"Now brotherhood in most of the myths I know of is confined to a bounded community. In bounded communities, aggression is projected outward.

For example, the ten commandments say, "Thou shalt not kill." Then the next chapter says, "Go into Canaan and kill everybody in it." That is a bounded field. The myths of participation and love pertain only to the in-group, and the out-group is totally other. This is the sense of the world "gentile" - the person is not of the same order."

Which should suggest a translation check. Upon doing so we find the Hebrew of the old covenant commandment that has been translated simply as "kill" really conveys the more specific meaning of putting someone to death without cause.

Israel was meant to be servants of the nations. That was God's plan and a consistent theme throughout the OT, so that kinda blows your theory.

This.

A more accurate translation of the commandment is "Thou shall not murder." It may seem like splitting hairs, but it's really not.

I wouldn't call someone returning from war a murderer, but they've certainly killed.

It is very correct. Very few classic stories contain groups that are including towards everyone else.

It is also ironic that people who tries to prove you wrong with the distinction murder/kill are making the exact same point like in your quote.

The israelites killed philistines, but to end life of their own would be murder. The rules of brotherhood protect their own. It fits the quote perfectly

This just isn't true as there was an obvious (which is brought up all of the time) death penalty enforced within the community.

The death penalty in the community is for a specific act by a specific person. The outsiders are killed because they are, well, outsiders. The victims could be the most kind and noble being around.

Actually there is a difference in the use of the words kill and murder biblically.

Thats why you do not understand what you read many times. No offence meant but this is true for the majority of people in the world, believer and un-believer alike.
