Anyway, companies are always worried about their labor costs. If the business doesn't require as much help that day, they'll send you home. If you're "full time" you'll usually get your 40 hours, though probably less frequently in a retail job. If you're part time you can expect to work when they need you to work. Though it can be easy to find people who will give up their shifts to pad your time some.

Do you have a union? If so they've probably come to a reasonable arrangment with managment about what to do in situations like this that doesn't totally **** over the worker. As such there's incentive not to overschedule, but in other places the employer will just say, "Go home you don't get paid." "Oh you didn't even make enough to pay for gas to get here? Too bad.". Etc etc
