I don't think it's a meme but I've always done that because sometimes I type phonetically and a lot of the time I type how I would actually say something, i.e. I say "2 dollars" which would be typed as 2$, not "dollars 2" which is what $2 is to me. And since I am a trendsetter, ATC is following my lead.
