I think he figured out his destiny was at the ariport and just was tired of all the BS he went through. Plus I think he realized the impact of seeing the airport scene as an 8 year old had on him and knew he needed to see it to survive the plague. Also, he probably figured they would keep sending him back until it happened anyway. Anywho, I've found Gilliam movies are meant to provoke thought and tend not to worry about small plot holes.
