the other option would be letting him pay in installments the full amount.. but I'd rather have it right away, since it took 2 years for him to decide to pay.

If you'd lent him $7000 and he only wants to pay you back $6000 or whatever, you snap accept if you want to still be friends. always think of money you give to a friend as a gift and consider yourself lucky to get paid back, etc.
