Well, for 2008 I filled "married, filling separately" because we were separated and then divorced in 2008. The paper they just sent me says "this is a copy of the letter we sent to the taxpayer above. We are sending it to you because you filed a joint return with that tax payer for the period shown (which is 2008)" but I DIDN'T file jointly... unless he filed jointly, but wouldn't he need my signature at some point?

Indeed you would need to sign or he would have to have a specific or general power of attorney, which I am sure you would remember. It is just a **** up probably.

i would call whoever did your return that year and if you did it then you're probably gonna have to spend an hour or two on the phone with the IRS fyl

Might be able to just fax/email your return to the investigator. That would be best case scenario I reckon.

Yeah, I'm emailing my trustee (who filed the return for me) and seeing if she has a copy. I can't actually find the full return, just the cover page (??) for 2008, thought I have every other year.
