100% free market is clearly impossible, so I could settle with 10%.

the main problem is the lack of efficiency more than a specific amount. if the government could use my ~30% to do amazing things with great benefit to society (and thus myself/family) then I would happily pay it, but now it seems like the majority is logged up in useless non-value added programs with heavy administrative expenses and less real impact.

i get most of my tax back. when i have income i will donate to deserving (**** those "awareness, and 90% goes to administrative costs") charities.

It is certainly easy to feel sympathy and empathy for people you are close to. That doesn't make it difficult to feel empathy for strangers. I donate. I'm going to start donating my time since I'm living on a fixed income.

I will definitely agree that the government is not an efficient and well-oiled machine.
I will never buy that people who pay less in taxes would be more willing to donate though.

I seriously doubt there's a charity in this world run as efficiently as Social Security. Social Security runs at ~2% overhead and practically all charities run at ~20%+

I just honestly don't think you know what you're talking about.

So frustrating. My mom stopped going to church so she takes the 10% she used to give there and donates it to charitable causes. We have a neighbor who works w/o health insurance and got skin cancer .. gross hospital bills so she wrote him a huge check directly to him from that fund this year instead of charities. She's also organizing a drive for retired school teachers to donate school supplies to needy schools that don't have funding to supply their classrooms, yesterday she bought a bunch of crayons and glue for an art program.

To me it comes down to what kind of society we want to live in. Do we want to live in a society where the upper classes are enriched by the limited government intervention there is while poor people go with out health care and their children go with out art programs in school or do we want to live in a society that cares about things like that and pays for it by increasing the marginal tax rate on people earning > $200K/year by 3 percentage points?

There is class warfare going on ... and the poor are losing.
