I just read a thread about someone preferring PostgresQL over Access for their choice for the database backend. I have recently purchased PT3 and got and got PT2 as well, with PAHUD. Since PT3 does not support one of my Sites of choice at the moment, I will be using PT2 for that site.

Does PT2 have the option of using PostgresQL as the database backend? and if so, can PT2 use this database which is running on Linux server machine? I currently have PostgresQL installed and running on the Linux box, which PT3 uses without problems as well as a MySQL which is used for other purposes.

Thanks

PT2 and PostgresQL?

Yes, PT2 should be able to use the same database. Use the Utilities > PostgreSQL Settings and Convert Database options to convert the Access db to PostgreSQL.

Well, I figured out howto get PT2 to work with PostgreSQl running on a remote Linux server without installing PostgreSQL locally, on my laptop.

You to need grab the ODBC driver from:
http://www.postgresql.org/ftp/odbc/versions/msi/

Install it, mine worked for Vista.

Restart PT2, and now you have a choice to make in the Utilities->PostgreSQL Settings->ODBC Entry To Use:

I can now connect to my Linux server PostgreSQL database, which is the first part, now, can PT2 use the same database info as PT3. I'm not sure if the db schema for PT2 and PT3 are the same. I will further investigate this and will report back...

No, you can't use the same PT3 database with PT2.

See the FAQ, the "After PostgreSQL is installed" section here

Yea, I went and researched after my reply and came to the same conclusion as your reply!

So, I'm re-importing my hand histories and summaries for PokerStars. I decided to keep my Poker Sites and games in separate db's.

db:PokerStars-SNG
db:PokerStars-MTT
db:PokerStars-Ring

db:Bodog-SNG
etc...

I'm not sure if this is the best way to do things, since this is my first attempt at messing with PT2/3

Any comments on using multiple db's for each site/game?

There is no reason you need to be doing that, it's more of a hassle than it's worth to make sure the hands are going into the right databases.

Slightly off-topic:

How big (# hands) should I let my PT2 database get before starting a new one?

It depends. Once you feel that you think it's not working as fast as you prefer you could start a new db.
