Every time I try to load up PT, I get the following error:

I've checked the PostSQL settings menu and it does seem to be all correct, i.e. 5432 on localhost.

These errors will occur if your PostgreSQL database is not running. Click Start --> Programs --> PostgreSQL --> Stop Service, then Start --> Programs --> PostgreSQL --> Start Service to restart the PostgreSQL server. If PostgreSQL does not start properly, click Start --> Find Files/Folders and search for a file named postmaster.pid on the partition where PostgreSQL is installed. Once you find that file, delete it, then restart PostgreSQL as above, and it will start properly.

Thanks, but I'm on Vista - how do I get to this on this OS?

On Vista it should be Start > All Programs > PostgreSQL > Stop Service/Start Service

If that doesn't work, go to the c:\program files\postgresql\8.2\data folder and look for the postmaster.pid file there.

If deleting/restarting doesn't work...

have you been using PT/PostgreSQL without problems before this?
when did you last backup your PostgreSQL db?
did you install something on your computer right before this started? Like any firewall/anti-virus programs or updates to any such programs?
are you sure you are running PT as administrator?

Thanks, tried the Stop/Start one but it didn't work.

I found the postmaster.pid file but what do I do with it? Sorry for my pitiful lack of knowledge on this subject.

EDIT: Never had any problems prior to this.
No idea, oops :s
No.

On Windows Vista just click "All Programs" where I say "Programs" and the rest should be accurate.

ETA: I should really refresh the thread before posting to make sure I didn't miss much

Delete the postmaster.pid file. If it exists it will prevent PostgreSQL from starting (because it's only supposed to exist normally while PostgreSQL is running).

Ah. I thought that's what I was meant to do but I didn't want to start deleting stuff until I was sure

Deleted it, still getting the same error. Dammit.

When did you last backup the database?

Create a support ticket on the web site so I can verify you are a registered PT2 user and then I can provide more direction there

Please reference this 2+2 post so I know it's you.
