Hey,

I don't post on here that often, but I hope I get some help nevertheless.

Since Sep 3 I get the following error when opening PT3:

"PT was unable to connect to any PostgreSQL databases.

Please make sure you have PostgreSQL running."

Then, when PT3 opens, in the "players" column it says "unable to connect to database: NLSH" (name of my database obv.)

As I said, this problem occurred on Sep 3, after that I have forgotten about it and when I opened PT3 today the problem's still there.

I have PostgreSQL running, at least the postgres.exe process is shown in the taskmanager. I have also tried stopping and restarting it.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled PostgreSQL as well, didn't work.

I don't think I have changed anything, I may have installed a Windows update on September 3 though, not sure. Is there a way to find out what updates I have installed on a certain day?

I have Windows XP.

My firewall (Zonealarm) has both PT3 and PostgreSQL allowed.

I have also searched for this one file (forgot the name) that has to be deleted (at least that's what other users with the same problem have been told) and haven't found it on my PC.

Anybody got any ideas on how to solve this problem? I hope you understand everything, english is not my mother tongue, if any info is missing please tell me.

If you didn't already please try rebooting your computer and/or stopping and restarting the postgres service using Start > Programs > Postgres > Stop Service / Start Service.

What version of PT3 are you using?
If it's not Build 5.2 please update:
Download page
PT3 Build History / Release Notes

What version of postgres are you using?
Click Start --> Programs --> PostgreSQL --> psql to 'postgres'.
At the prompt type:
SELECT version();

I tried rebooting and stopping/starting the process.

I have Build 5.2.

BUT I have PostgreSQL 8.2.
I will try installing 8.3 now (which is the newest version as far as i know?). I think I remember I had problems installing it before though, we'll see.

Do I have to uninstall 8.2 before?

edit: ok, I just saw 8.4.1 is the newest version.

If you upgrade to 8.3 or 8.4 PostgreSQL won't recognize your 8.2 database as 8.2 -> 8.3 -> 8.4 breaks backwards compatibility.

What firewall/anti-virus software are you using?

So that means I have to create a new database when I have 8.4 installed? Btw. I have installed 8.4 now and it still says "unable to connect..." when starting PT3.

I have a Zonealarm firewall and Antivir XP as anti-vir software (Antivir XP is a german software I think), but as I said, Zonealarm has both PT3 and PostgreSQL fully allowed, checked it yesterday.

Is there a possibility that it would help if I re-installed PT3?

thanks.

No, reinstalling PT3 wouldn't make a difference.

If you create a support ticket using this link we'll schedule you for a remote session which is likely going to be the fastest and easiest way to get this fixed for you.

okay.

Should I put this thread in the message instead of explaining it again?

okay nevermind, found the reference box.

Is it okay if I leave the last box empty?

Just put something like "See reference thread, requesting remote session" and that should be fine.

I'm having the same problem. Was there any easy fix or should I schedule a remote session with PT?

Thanks

For most people this is caused by a Vista update so a reboot fixes the problem.
If you've followed all the suggestions in this thread without success you can schedule a remote session.

I just had the remote session and now it's all fine.

Made a mistake though and uninstalled PostgreSQL 8.2 so that my database is gone and I have to create a new one. But at least PT3 is working again.

So I have the same problem but after I get the error message I press "ok" and I'm able to start up pt importing hands. It appears to be working correctly though I'm still getting the error message.

Does this make sense?

Larock - It's possible that you have an old database which no longer exists but PT3 is still trying to connect to, or something like that.
Open the Database > Database Management window and see what databases are listed.

If you can't see a problem there you can send us a log file showing your start up process if you like, and we'll work out what is going on.
