Hi Guys,

I am curious to know if the summarized EV calculation can/should be used as an indicator of how you are playing?

For example, if I have say 50k hands played at .05/.10 and my winnings are $1000 but my EV calculation is -$100. Should I conclude that I am actually a losing player/break even at this stake or is there something I am not seeing? Also, does an EV of -$100 mean I should have lost $100 or that I should have only won $900?

I would think that the calculation becomes inaccurate if you create a large pot before the money goes in. Say you create a pot of $10 preflop an then you shove on flop for another $5 and win $20. The EV calc will be done as a percent of $20 based on what your EV was on flop and not EV on the $10 preflop plus your EV on the second $10. Perhaps I havent thought it out enough which is why I am asking you guys .

Trying to make sure I am honest with myself and budget my time for learning versus playing.

Thanks,
NYDI

Honestly, I personally think EV calculations are quite overrated. You are absolutely right that when a large percentage of the money goes in on a street before the final all-in the results are skewed.

If I were you, I would concentrate on getting better at poker and let the all-in results fall where they may. You can't control that part of things; dedicate your effort on what you can control and things will work out much better for you.

Thanks for the response. I guess I am always trying to improve my game it's just hard for me to decide whether I am a winning player or not. I mean, yes I am winning but could that be because I am running well or because I am actually making the right long term decisions.

I guess you're right in that I should just continue to improve and plug leaks regardless of whether I know for sure or not I am a winning player.

i don't want to open a new thread for this but why's EV graph so wrong?
i mean, i just went preflop all in with KK versus JJ (where he hadn't flush draw option) i won that hand and my ev graph still dropped down for the amount i won.
same thing few hands before when i was all in with QQ vs QQ where i'm playing very -ev move according to ev graph. that can't be correct lol.

Please attach the hand history in question to a support ticket so that we can investigate. Once we have the hand we can determine where things are going wrong and get it fixed.
