sigh looks like i lost my dbase .

so what i want to do now is uninstall postgres and reinstall it so that i create a new dbase on the 500 gb HD.

pls tell me how to do this. when i install postgres do i tell it to install in drive e: ? if i do that will all dbases be created in drive E ?

If you're reinstalling from scratch, you can just install PostgreSQL on your E: drive and that will put all of the databases there as well.

If you don't want to reinstall from scratch, follow these directions.

thanks i will start from scratch tomm. i will also use 8.4.1

i remember reading a good article on how to tweak so that postgres uses more ram etc. cant find it. can u link me to it pls

Did you mean this one?

kool. thats what i wanted

i got my hd. reinstalled postgres. now i started a manual import of 1million hands. it started at a speed of 150H/sec

after one hr this has dropped to 80H/sec with 300k already imported. is this normal for hands/sec to slow down as time goes by.

once i run housekeeping and i import again will it start at the 150H/sec ?

this used to happen the same way earlier also. it would start out at full speed then drop down and stablize at like 50H/sec or so.

i have 800MB free Ram as per taskmanager so not sure why it is slowing down

This is normal; it slows down because it needs to check to make sure the new hands aren't part of sessions that are already imported previously. It should continue to get slower as the database gets larger but the rapidity of the drop will level off fairly quickly.

just to update. i am all set now. pt3 works at almost double the speed and my life is a lot easier. it took only 3 hrs to run housekeeping after importing 700k hands

i guess most ppl dont realize how big of a HD they really need !

i recommend 500gb. it looks like with 500gb i wont have any trouble for a long time

That's good news! Thanks for the feedback.

500 GB looks to me very large for the PT database; it shouldn't be more than 40-50Gbs.

Perhaps it runs faster because you did database management after a long time?

In any case, your next purchase should be a good 80-160 GB SSD.

as of now everything is blazing fast. there is not practical need for SSD. i am playing 16 tables at once and there is zero lag.

if i remove stats that i never use will it speed up the cache update process even more?

i see a whole bunch of stats that i will never ever use. also some way to back up so i can reimport them or something
11-15-2009 , 10:17 AM
You can export the stats to back them up, and yes removing them will speed up cache update speeds.

With respect to database size, if you're playing full ring, 1M hands is about 10G, and 6max is 2/3 of that (for obvious reasons).
