What's Vegas like in January ? What's Vegas like in January ?

Wife an I are in the midst of planning a long weekend trip in late January before we try for our 2nd kid and go into permanent lockdown.

I've been to Las Vegas half a dozen times (got married there). But it's always been Spring, Summer or Fall during tourist season.

My question is how much different is Las Vegas during the off season? I myself like the idea of less crowds and I'm not a big pool person so those being closed don't bother me. Will other things be closed? Will the weather be shitty? I'm seeing 60s? How is the poker? What can I do to keep my wife off my ass while I try to get a couple of sessions in?

This might be my last time to get out there for the foreseeable future. Any answers or advice is appreciated. TIA!

Chilly & Windy with sunshine during the day. Very cold late night if you find yourself out past 10PM. Poker used to be really dry in January, but the closing of many rooms should make this year interesting as far as crowds.

Usually the tourists are mostly Vegas vets and far fewer of the younger, first-time, "WOOOO VEGAS!!!" types.

Very cold as in below freezing, or cold relative to what Vegas is normally like? I'll be coming from Kansas so the weather here could be anywhere from -10 to 65 in winter. In all likelihood 45 will feel like shorts weather compared to what I'm used to lol

I live in the northeast and like Vegas a lot this time of year.
To me it's perfect weather. I'll walk around with a hoody at night and be fine but see people bundled up like it's -20 degrees.

Late January poker wise is pretty slow.
I haven't been there in Jan since pre covid but back then poker would really slow down after the conference championship games with 2 weeks off before the Superbowl plus back then that's when the LAPC started so a lot of people would go there for poker.

If you can I'd go earlier in Jan.

Coming from the Midwest, January in Vegas actually feels really good. We had a wind chill of 5F this morning which made running in shorts somewhat unpleasant. Google tells me the record low in Vegas in the month of January is 8F.

Unless your definition of "very cold" is everything below freezing, I think Vegas barely ever gets that way?

With the 17 game schedule, the NFL Conference Championship Games are actually on the last Sunday in January.

And the pro bowl the first weekend in February!

Or I guess I should say the pro bowl games?

That new concept with skill challenges during the week and flag football on Sunday might make for some interesting betting options.

Any change has to be better. I got the ticket pre-order option today, but I don't think I'm going.

Edit: And I agree with others... if 45 is shorts weather, then you'll probably enjoy the weather. I was there a week before xmas last year and didn't even bring a coat (and 45 degree weather is not shorts weather for me). Even if you aren't a big pool person, some will be open. I can't speak to poker that time of year. If your wife is into the spa, then that's always a good option.

I'd say in the 30s (F) at the worst and probably in the 50s during the day when outside. The casinos themselves will be temperature controlled but will usually be in the high 60s or low 70s.

Any chance poker is better MLK weekend? I'm planning to go that weekend and figured the gov't holiday paired wiht the first round of NFL playoffs could potentially draw a crowd?

I've found that football games, especially playoff games, tend to depress the poker games while they're on, as many poker players gravitate toward the sportsbooks. However, evenings during playoff weekends are usually pretty juicy for poker, as people spend their winnings or try to earn their next bets.

I doubt that the holiday will make much difference one way or the other. Every weekend in January will be a gooberfest. There are a couple of big conventions in town then.

You had me worried for a second. The last thing I want to do is spend my weekend around 25,000 porn addicts.

CES convention goers come to town with a white shirt and $100 bill, stay for 4 days and never change either one.

If you want a drinking/gambling crowd, come to Las Vegas during the NFR.

For the wife, a couple of full session spa days might do the trick. Plenty of options. You both get some "me time."
Anthony Curtis' Las Vegas Advisor has been a good info source for decades: https://www.lasvegasadvisor.com/vegas-with-an-edge/
If you're a golfer, mornings are cold and you might have to wait for greens to melt off morning frost. Plenty of nice courses though. Dress warm, the winds can be cold, even in the 60's.
I prefer a rental car. Easy to get from point to point when planning to play at different casinos from where you're staying.

Who says they are "addicts" and not responsible adults who casually enjoy the industry (or are employed in the industry)?

You are a sad sack in the fact you're trying to keep your "wife off my ass" before trying to impregnate her.

This could be one of the most pathetic posts on 2+2 that I've ever seen. And that is saying a lot.

There's betting on the skills games at the NBA All-Star game, including the thing that's literally called "Skill Challenge". Last year, KAT won the 3-point challenge with +1200 odds, highest among all players. Slam dunk contest was won by +175 Obi Toppin with the second shortest odds.

Why can't there be betting on things like that at the Pro Bowl? I thought you might be referring to some weird rule about no bets allowed because the Pro Bowl is in Las Vegas or something like that.

There are things that you can bet on where people actually know the outcome before it happens..
