Where are the best neighbourhoods to consider spending extended time in Vegas? I'm considering spending 3-6 months per year in Vegas and need to consider all aspects, (rentals vs purchase, furnishings, price, safety, distance to strip, etc).

Will be with my wife, so safety is a priority. Thanks all.

There's obviously going to be tons of variation within different areas, factors to consider such as what sort of things are important to you and what you want to be close to, budget, etc etc...

But the short answer is don't live in North Las Vegas, and do live in Summerlin.

I'm partial to the southwest area personally.

Anything near the strip or downtown or Nellis or large swaths of North LV is bad. Everybody loves Summerlin and Henderson/GreenValley. But the southwest and far northwest are fine if you go out far enough.

southwest is where it's at... anywhere along the 215 corridor from summerlin to the 15.

Yeah TONS of crime in those high rises...Mandarin is trash ridden, Veer? You'd better watch your back 24/7, don't even get me started on Panorama.

Summerlin I know when I vacation there I feel safe, great golf, great shopping, Red Rock Close. If I was to stay an extended period that is were I would rent a house.

indeed... even though there is still a lot of inventory around, things are/have been looking up. time to buy if you are long term.

Yes, we know there are these vaults built on/near the strip and downtown. But when people ask about "neighborhoods" they aren't normally in the market for a high-rise unit, and do not generally consider the confines of the interior of the high rise as "the neighborhood".

At least at Mandarin and Veer you can step out the door without too much fear of instant death. Not so sure that's true on Dean Martin. And if your 115lb wife is walking to the nearest Walmart Supercenter at 9pm by herself, neither choice is exactly ideal.

I'm in love with henderson/green valley. Summerlin is great too and it's nice having red rock nearby. Summerlin just seems so far away from everything to me and I like the henderson area better personally. You can't go wrong with either for a short term stay imo.

I have lived in summerlin and Green Valley prefer GVR a little more than Red Rock. I say they are both the same distance but there are a few ways to get to strip from Gvr.

Agree with some others, Summerlin is the nuts: tons of nice houses to buy or rent, lots of good places to eat & not too far from the strip. I would also recommend SouthWest LV (Mountains Edge community) easy access to the 215 and 15 and you can get to the heart of the strip within 20 mins. GL OP

I guess it depends upon what you consider near the strip and/or far enough out in the SW. I live in one of the nicest, safest developments in the entire valley, and I'm about 5 miles straight out west off of Trop.

5 miles is close to far enough out. But it sounds like you're in Spanish Trail. A place like that counts a lot like a high rise condo. Ringed with a high wall, guard-gated, and $400/mo (or whatever they are) HOA fees to pay for it.

If I can't live behind guarded gates, I'd rather be a couple miles farther out on Tropicana. Rainbow feels very sketchy, still, and that's about 4 miles. Buffalo is better at 5 miles, Durango better still at 6 miles, but Apache is where it has mostly lost that urban jungle feel, and I think that's about 7 miles. But I don't live there so I don't spend a lot of time hanging out in the area.

It's all just an approximation, and my opinion. And it's not a hugely informed opinion, for that matter. I ain't a real estate agent or metro cop, I haven't lived anywhere but the SSE, and I don't get out much. Feel free to ignore me, and I mean no disrespect to anybody's neighborhood.

I live about 4.5 miles south of Trop, but there's an airport and an interstate between me and the strip, which helps act as a buffer, I think. I wouldn't move any closer, that's fersure, and I often wish I were a wee bit further out. But it does make the trip to MGM a 12 minute affair most of the time.

Yes, that's correct. Spanish Trail runs from Rainbow to Durango, so it's possible to live here and be as close as 4 miles to the Strip.

No offense taken. I was just pointing out to a poster who is concerned about safety and who is unfamiliar with LV that it is possible to live relatively close to the Strip and still live in one of the nicest neighborhoods in the Valley.

Henderson Green Valley Area is great. It has a community feel to it. People are nice and some really awesome neighborhoods to choose from. Tons of parks as well as the multigenerational center for indoor bball and swimming as well. You also have pretty much everything you'd close by on Eastern Ave.

Summerlin seems to have a bit of an older crowd than Henderson, but mind you I don't go there often other than to go hiking at red rock. That said it is very nice area and quiet and you can't go wrong having red rock right next door to explore.

Just as the above poster said there are plenty of options within Vegas as well that are not very far drive from the strip. GVR is also close by being only about a 12 min drive to the strip.

I have been living in Green Valley for 2 years now. It takes me about 10 - 15 minutes to get to the Bellagio(for point of reference since it is close to anywhere you might play) I love my neighborhood and everything is new and nice. The houses are really cheap and I probably wouldn't want to live anywhere else. Summerlin is nice, but Henderson is closer to the airport which is very important to me since i travel often.

Just moved what i thought looked like pretty far SW (near Durango and Blue Diamond) But its cheap, very safe, feels like youre away from the ratrace of the strip, plenty of services nearby, and still only 20 minutes to strip with good traffic (more like 30 near peak hours)
