What's up Vegas Regulars!!

I'm Dirgo, and I have been living in GA pretty much my whole life. I recently broke up with my girl and got laid off from my welding Job.......soooo I totally need a change of scenery!

I am pretty financially sound since I have some savings and I'm getting unemployment. I also have my own vehicle to.

How long do you think it would take to obtain some employment and a place?

I love poker and while I have no dreams of coming and winning the main event this year, I'd like to come out and scope it all out and if everything goes right to hopefully get to play in it by next year.

Any Advice would be great, I have been lurking on here for sometime now and this is my Very first post Nice to meet all of Ya'll and Hopefully I can meet some of Ya'll in person soon. I think I could get to Vegas by June 1st

You won't find a welding job out here, even if you're in the union you will be at the end of the line.

You shouldn't have a problem finding a place out here, there are plenty of cheap empty units.

Yeah I have a union card....So What's the likelihood of getting a decent casino job or pretty much any decent job with mainly only HVAC and Welding Experience?

Most of the stuff i'm seeing on the LV CL looks like junk....I've been making $28/hr out here for the last five years so it'd be pretty hard to go to $8/hr . I mean I'd be willing to go down to like maybe $15 just to get relocated somewhere.

Also What do you think the Pros and Cons are of living in Vegas without a vehicle? I could probably sell my truck for 6-7k which would give me a little more time to find something.

Thanks for the Responses

I have seen much HVAC positions... there are also gov jobs available. I would suggest looking into employment PRIOR TO moving, most jobs are available online. if you can find something, by all means move... vegas is great, as long as you have money to spend.

PS: You need a car here... dont leave home without one

so come out go to the hall and sign then you can deduct you travel and some living expenses from your tax bill and will off set most of the tax you pay for your UIB. your weekly UIB out here is $400 a week. then if you have a bankroll you can start grinding. that and the $400 a week should tide you over for awhile.

Ive been booked for 17 months no work!! claimed 9000 miles at $.55 mile on last years income tax. Booking in some places around the country and going to and fro the hall

with UIB $ some investments still did around 28K and made poker pay on top of that.
Its a long haul from the 120K ish I banked in 09 but its enough for me to glide by on.

Will they let my unemployment transfer from state to state like that?? bc out here it's only $330 a week...with $43 a month dues to the hall

I could totally get a place and have running money on $1600 a month.

Plus I would definitely be interested in grinding out for the extra monies

Are there alot of live coaches out there?? I have seen lots of online coaches but none really for the live scene.

I am a consistent winner in my home games around here, but I would like to have someone who makes a living grinding to show me the ropes, bc I'm sure beating the donkeys Im comfortable with is a whole nother animal than Sin City.

Thanks again for the replies....Its not easy being green

you will be suprised how soft the games are in vegas especially on weekends late night
people love to drink and play cards for hundreds if not thousands of dollars
I dont understand
but I like it

I want to reiterate that traveling expenses and mileage are deductible as a work search.

Im much more bullish on LV than most. but I do see a modest uptick in construction esp green energy construction here in NV.

I made the move 13 years ago and it was one of the best moves I've made.

What about health insurance? unemployment benefits don't last forever.

Thanks for the mileage tip. I will definitely keep a record of everything I spend on my way out.

stretch:....I'm healthy and in shape and under 30...probably ok for right now and I will be actively pursuing a job in my trade and in others.

Anyways I guess thats all folks. Hope to see you guys by the 2 plus 2 convention in July at least

I cant imagine that the work options in Vegas are much worse then GA... If you got the money, I say move to Vegas. If your not in Health care or some type of sales work then you may have a hard time finding a job but it wont be imposible imo. Follow your dreams and move, life is to short to keep taking the easy route. Vegas can be the greatest place in the world to live! Or Vegas will kick your ass, you will go crawling back to GA broke, and NEVER EVER come to Vegas again.

The work options in Vegas are much worse than almost anywhere. See the "Official Don't-Come-to-Vegas-Looking-For-Work" thread.

Note also that construction is one of those industries that got hit especially hard in Vegas. They're not building any new hotels or big housing developments any time soon.

Brag: Booked a 3rd place in the local bar tournament yesterday evening and then a 1st place in the late night game.

it looks like the options are about the same in Ga or LV.....I went to the union meeting yesterday afternoon and our local has 263 people out of work officially....out of about 800 or so that are actually A list members meaning they are not production workers and travellers etc... and they are prediciting no big jobs in the state until fall/winter ....usually you can add six months to whatever b.s. figure they throw out there

I think BigFishy got it right...You gotta follow your dreams.

@ timmer....Heard last night you can claim UEB in Mass. if you have worked in at least two states during the year for 660 a wk...dont know if its true or not but another tinknocker claims to have done it :/

Good! I quit my job of 6 years as a GM of a car dealership so that I can move back to Vegas in a month (June 6th). It does help that my best friend has a 4 bedroom, big ass house I can move into. My wife is a nurse ($30 an hour) so our living expenses are taken care of... Even if I didn't have the luxury of an easy move to Vegas, I think that I would still make the same decision. I would rather go broke following my dreams then to regret not doing it when I am an old man. You have to live with regret forever, money is replaceable.. Go for it! See you in Vegas

Lots of people regret gambling their money away though. And money is replaceable only if you have a source for obtaining more. Poker is not going anywhere, so I don't understand why this all has to happen now. It can also be a supplement to your income instead of your primary source. And TBH, it doesn't sound like you have much business making it a primary source.

Not that anyone hell bent on moving here with a dream and not much else is going to listen, but I can't read this and not say something.
