Introduction:

My 3rd trip to Vegas. Plan is mostly for eating nice food and playing some poker.

Friday the 28th:
6.40am flight from Dublin to London. This starts well with my failure to set my alarm and waking up 5 mins after I was planning on being on the bus to the airport. Manage to get on the flight with about 5 mins to spare anyway.
Arrive in Vegas around 3pm and head to the Cosmopolitan. Taxi driver suggests the freeway, I suggest Swenson to Harmon (ty to whoever suggested that in the long hauling thread). He protests, saying that it will be really busy. Shockingly he’s wrong and it was a quick trip.
My plan at this stage is to stay awake as long as I can to get myself on Vegas time. I’m usually pretty good at this….

Saturday the 29th:
5am.
Really?? Solid work.
Pretty pissed off at myself on this one. Should have gone to bed for a couple of hours when I arrived and gotten myself back up in the evening so I’d be waking up at a reasonable time. Potter around the room for a few hours including a long soak in the tub. Had promised myself I’d buy myself a coat this trip - this may seem unimportant but I haven’t owned a coat in 10 years, and having recently hit 30, I figured having more warm clothing options than a hoody would be a good idea. Head out to the premium outlet mall and pick up a coat and some jeans/shirts. It’s pretty comedic how much more I’d have to pay for what I got in Ireland.
Back to the hotel with another longhaul attempt from a taxi driver (the last of them thankfully). He fails again. Have lunch in Holsteins and get myself a Drunken Monkey milkshake (REESE’S, BANANA, MALT, FRANGELICO) – a little sweet for my tastes, but very good all the same, and the Gold Standard burger (DRY AGED BEEF SIRLOIN BURGER WITH SMOKED BACON, AGED GOAT CHEDDAR CHEESE, TOMATO CONFIT, BABY ARUGULA & GARLIC-CHIVE AIOLI) which was one of the best gourmet burgers I’ve had.

Back to the room for a shower before heading out to Mandalay Bay for UFC 137. This was my first live UFC event and I really enjoyed it. I had a relatively cheap seat ($350), but the layout of the arena meant there’s not that many “bad” seats in the place. Had a great view and only had to look at the screens when they were against one corner of the cage and for some of the ground action.

Brief thoughts:

Enjoyed the card overall and loved the atmosphere for the main event. Was sad/glad to see Mirko Cro-Cop announce his retirement; just don’t think he has much to offer anymore given what an incredible striker he once was. Was really impressed with Donald Cerrone – felt he was making a mistake in seemingly looking past Dennis Siver, but dealt with him with relative ease.

Stopped into the Mandalay bay poker room afterwards for my first taste of poker for the trip. Sat into a 1-2 game and bled off $200 over the course of an hour and a half. The early start catches up on me and I’m back in my room pretty early.

My room was on one of the higher floors but was above the Marquee pool so the music/bass was floating up to the room. Am glad I’m a deep sleeper as I’d have had to have waited til the club ended otherwise.

Sunday the 30th.

Woke up at a much more sensible hour and headed out to the Venetian for the $550 Deepstack tournament at 12. This was a pretty spectacular grind. I finished 28th/29th out of 117 players without ever getting above the starting stack. Don’t think I’ve ever been that card dead. Best hand I saw all day was 88.

Was too late/exhausted to figure out a place to eat, so dropped into Noodle Asia which is always reliable.

Monday the 31st.

Played the $350 deepstack at 12pm. Slightly better run of cards came to an end with about half the field left when I lost a race with JJ against AK. Decided I wasn’t done with poker for the day and splashed around in a 1-2 nlh game and then a 4-8 O8 game dropping $300 between the two. Uninspiring dinner at Grand Lux.

Tuesday the 1st.

Lunch at Estiatorio Milos.

Starter:
Fresh Maryland Lump Crab Cake with marinated gigantes beans & mustard emulsion

Main:
Fresh Gulf Wild Shrimp Saganaki with tomato & feta

Dessert:
Yogurt Martini

A cracking lunch, everything was perfectly prepared and was wonderfully light and fresh tasting. Only regret was that I didn’t manage to make another trip here.

Poker:

Decided to pay a visit to the Aria poker room and it lived up to the positive write-ups it gets. Got involved in a long 1-3 Omaha session. Played a total of 10 hours losing $360. Made a mistake of not quitting the game when it got tougher (the guy who kept buying in max and getting upset when his 2 pair lost left).

The session was broken up by dinner at Julian Serrano.

Made a semi-mistake by getting the $39 early evening menu. I really should have gone with the regular dinner menu as the prices/portion sizes are pretty reasonable overall.

Starter:

traditional spanish chicken croquetas.

These weren’t bad by any account by weren’t particularly memorable other than that I couldn’t get the thought of Findus Crispy Pancakes out of my head when eating them (don’t know if they have these in America).

Main course:

half chicken | sautéed cube potatoes | spanish chorizo

While I should have been more adventurous in my menu choices, this was a excellent bit of cooking and might well be the most perfectly cooked chicken I’ve had. Was a huge portion too and could happily be shared.

Dessert:

molten chocolate cake | orange jelly | blood orange ice cream

The chocolate cake was good without being a standout. Loved the Ice cream though.

Nice stuff.

I'm the same in Vegas - always wake up very early no matter what I try (which is ****ing annoying after a heavy night on the beer )

Warning! Long, lots of pictures and not much poker.

Wednesday the 2nd

Spoiler:

One of the few definitive things Id planned in advance was a visit to é by Jose Andres. It's a mini Restaurant that seats 16 people per night over the course of two “shows”. I had a reservation for the early seating at 5.30. Didn't do much in the way of being productive prior to this, just had a wander around the strip.

Upon arrival at Jaleo which is the restaurant é is inside, I was greeted and presented with the drinks options for the night. There was a wine pairing along with a non-alcoholic pairing, or you can just order from the regular drinks menu. I'm not much of a wine drinker, so opted for the non-alcoholic option with the plan of having a couple of drinks from the normal menu thrown in. Regrettably I didn't take pictures of the drinks and am struggling to remember their names, though they comprised an extremely interesting combination of flavours and worked very well with the meal. Drink highlight was the Pineapple Upside-down cake. It turned out that they'd had some cancellations and the result was that there were only 3 diners; myself and a couple in their 60's. It became apparent that they were well travelled food-wise and had been to a couple of Jose Andres' restaurants previously and made the meal more interesting by asking lots of questions.

Let's dive right in – I’ll do my best to describe everything, but some of it was pretty off the wall and I’ll struggle with the right foodie nomenclature. Thankfully they presented us with a copy of the menu after dinner, so I wasn't worried with remembering the names of everything. Unfortunately the lighting didn't work too well with my rubbish phone camera, so the pictures didn't turn out as well as i'd have hoped.

The Menu:

Gin and Tonic:

Not just any Gin and Tonic, this was made with liquid nitrogen and was fantastic, though still not as good as the “regular” G+T from the regular drinks menu.

Spanish 'Clavel”

This is a delicate crispy fruit “flower” served in a plate in the shape of Jose Andres' hand. The overall course of the menu was to start and finish with “sweets”.

Caramelized Pork Rinds:

These were exactly what they sounded like and were fantastic.

Apple 'Brazo de Gitano':

This was an incredibly light 'Swiss roll' with a creamy cheese inside. This was pretty much the only thing on the menu that I wasn't taken with, just felt the texture/flavour combination that many of the dishes go for didn't do this many favours.

Nitro Almond Cup:

Unsurprisingly this involved liquid nitrogen again and was really interesting. It was topped with caviar giving a subtle salt flavour against the melt in the mouth creamy texture of the cup.

Crispy Chicken Skin in Escabeche:

The first dish to involve foam – i'll go on a mini-rant about foam in a later section/day of the trip report, but this was an excellent dish. The crispy chicken skin combined with chicken pieces that were hidden under the foam made for an intense flavour.

Jose Taco:

This very simple dish was 'just' caviar on top of jamon iberico de belloto and was delicious.

Oliva Sferica Ferran Adria:

This was a recipe from Jose Andres' mentor Ferran Adria of El Bulli and may have been the best example of the importance of the texture/flavour contrast that ran through the menu. The dish was an olive shaped bubble that burst as soon as it was in your mouth for a deep, rich olive flavour.

Bocata De Calamares:

Introduced as a play on one of Jose Andres' favourite childhood dishes, this was a plan on a calamari sandwich with the calamari replaced with uni in a brioche bun. They could have done with serving 5 of these!

Cava Sangria:

This was another flavour bubble, bursting with the flavour of sangria and was a nice fresh interlude before the start of the “main courses”

Artichoke puree with Vanilla:

This the only dish other than the Brazo de Gitano that didn't blow me away. It was primarily down to my indifference to artichokes, but still had a lot going for it due to the wonderful accompanying sauces.

Lobster with Citrus & Jasmine:

This was absolutely incredible, and one of those dishes where you wish they'd given you three portions. Some beautifully cooked lobster served with a sauce made from the lobster head/shell with a stunning citrus/foam accompaniment.

Chickpea Stew with Iberico Ham:

Another textural delight – the 'chickpeas' were more flavour bubble and made for the best soup you're ever likely to have.

Turbot with Bone marrow:

Like the lobster dish, this was highlighted by the perfectly cooked melt in the mouth turbot which could have easily been served on its own to great effect but the accompaniments complemented it superbly.

Rosemary wild mushrooms in papilotte:

Calling this “mushroom soup in a bag” does it a big disservice, but that's what it is. Only it's the best mushroom soup i've ever had.

Secreto Of Iberico Pork with Squid:

Another dish that could be served without the add-ons but they only contribute further to some amazing ingredients.

Orange Pith Purée with La Serena:

The first of the desert menu. Probably the weakest of the desserts and was still very good.

Flan:

This was my favourite of the deserts, beautifully prepared mini flan round, surrounding orange ice. The rich creamy flan played fantastically against the sharpness of the ice.

Pan Con Chocolate:

This was a de-constructed chocolate cake and was wonderful. It consisted of cream and caramelized bread piped against the side of the bowl covered in cocoa/chocolate powder with olive oil in the bottom of the dish. The idea of the dish was to eat downwards and pick up all elements of the dish. Only just edged out by the flan as the best dessert.

Arroz Con Leche:

This was a play on a crème brulee with the cone taking the place of the top of the crème brulee and with three different flavours piped into it. The idea being that you eat it in three bites with each bite producing a different result.

Fizzy Paper:

This sounds exactly like what it is. A little tower of “paper” with citrus/sherbet fizz as it melts in your mouth.

25 Second Bizcocho:

Cooked in 25 seconds in the microwave this minute cake with cream inside made for a satisfying end to the meal.

“Air” Chocolates:

These would usually be served alongside an espresso, but i'm not a coffee drinker so they were washed down with the aforementioned pineapple upside-down cake drink.

Now the ugly bit – the meal itself came to a total of $322 (menu is 160, plus drinks, tax and gratuity).
Obviously this isn't your run of the mill meal and as an occasion, it's worth every penny. The only thing likely to stop me from going again on my next Vegas trip is my desire to go to Joel Robuchon.
The service is fantastic, with all of the courses explained as they're being plated in front of you which is a nice touch.

Back to the mundane:

Two of the guys from Dublin arrived and were staying at the hard-rock hotel. I headed out for a few beers followed by some 1-3 NL. Pretty uneventful night for me despite our efforts to liven up the game. I'm a huge fan of the Hard-Rock straddle – it's a Mississippi straddle with the button being the last to act – action goes from utg to cut-off as normal, then skips to the SB and BB and then finally to the button. Finished the game down $30 after the guys quit to get some sleep, but not without one of them getting busted with a pretty ugly slowroll when the villain had KJ on a JJK board. Stay classy bro!

So often I'll try some acclaimed tasting menu and leave having really enjoyed the experience but not really being able to identify an individual component that makes me want to return.

By the way, how is the name 'é' pronounced? Is it 'eh' like the Fonz, 'eh' like 'yeah' or just 'eee'? I'm guessing the second if this is a Spanish theme.

pronounced just like if you were referencing the letter E itself (as in a, "E", i, o, u).... "eeee" from your examples. Not sure why... because technically é should be pronounced "ay" but what can ya do.

It tasted awesome. I would think (without actually knowing) that the type of squid (no idea what type they were) probably has a lot to do with it working as a pairing. Presumably due to their size, their taste was a lot more subtle and didn't overpower the pork. It probably also helps that I really like squid.

The lobster was amazing and was the best lobster I've ever had. To answer your question - in terms of things I've never had, the chickpea soup and the Cava Sangria bubble are probably the most likely things that you're not going to find a comparable version of on another menu.

No pics in this one.

Thursday the 3rd

Time to do some touristy stuff. One of the recent arrivals from Dublin mentioned that they were thinking about heading to The Gun Store which I hadn't managed on previous trips so jumped at the chance.

Arrived earlyish which was a good idea, as our 45 minute wait would have tunred into a 90 minute one if we'd shown up about 15 mins later. Being a horror movie fan my only option was to pick the Zombie Package. For $149 I got a pistol (can't remember what type off the top of my head), a shotgun (Benelli M4), an AR-15 and an Uzi 9mm. Was my first time firing a gun, and the instructor we had was excellent – gave us a good overview of how to stand/hold the guns and how the guns would behave. The process was pretty quick without feeling rushed and I really enjoyed it. The shotgun was by far my favourite, though the Uzi was fun too. Set myself a tiny goal of making a headshot and managed it with all the guns and am now fairly confident i'd be able to not die first if I had a gun during the impending zombie apocalypse. Though given our lack of readily available guns in Ireland, I think we'd be in serious trouble.

After we were done shooting, we headed over to Chipotle for lunch. The other two guys were pretty excited about this, and I'm still not sure why. Generally the burrito was fine, but I found it pretty plain and can't see myself adding it to my list of favoured fast food places. This was followed by a bit of a wander around the Forum Shops including an unbelieveably tedious wait in the Apple store – PLEASE SELL MY FRIEND AN IPAD!!

Walked back up the strip after this, meandering through random shops on my way back to the hotel.

Dinner was at one of my favourite Vegas restaurants Lotus Of Siam. Ended up being 8 of us for dinner with some more arrivals from Dublin and a couple of locals. As with my previous visits, I wasn't disappointed (sorry, no pics unfortunately). Had the stuffed chicken wings which sounded more interesting than they were. Wasn't sure how they'd manage to stuff some wings, but it turned out they were stuffed drumsticks. They weren't bad, but won't be ordered on a future visit. The main more than made up from them. Had the drunken noodles with soft shell crab which was fantastic. Aside from having excellent food, Lotus has another big selling point – it's incredibly reasonably priced. After sucesfully navigating credit card roulette the meal came to $300 for all of us including tip. Everyone had a starter and a main and a couple of drinks (no wine drinkers in the group).

Went to the Hard Rock again and settled into a mostly empty bar for a few beers and some pool. While playing pool one of the other patrons who was playing pool struck up a conversation. If I'd made a better read I wouldn't have mentioned that my preferred form of gambling was poker. The next 10 minutes involved trying to play pool while this gent explained how unlucky he was in his thick New York accent. Night ended reasonably early as I wanted to be fresh for the following days poker tournament.

Friday the 4th

A poker heavy day started with the $550 NLH event at the Venetian. Never really got going in this and hovered below starting stack for a long time until I got knocked out with TP+NFD against a flopped flush.

Wasn't done for the day so stuck my name down for some 1-2 and 2-5 PLO. They called the list for the 2-5 and I took my seat with two others. They offered to start us shorthanded which I agreed to, but neither of the other players was interested. Waited for about 10 mins for more players who never materialised and got called for the 1-2 game. Sat in and dropped $400 pretty quickly managing to fail to sucessfully run it twice on two occasions. Got moved to another table and bought in for $300. Ran spectacularly well and scooped a few decent sized pots. Was one of the softest Omaha games I've ever been involved in with some of the most comedically awful plays I've seen. There was 2 competant but untroubling players and the rest seemed to think they were playing some manner of holdem with bonus cards. I've got 2 pair! Good to hear. Regrettably had to quit when I developed a splitting headache and left with $1640. That was the end of the day for me as I went back to the hotel to lie down and fell asleep pretty quickly.
