Last summer while on a weekend lazy-afternoon cruise on my Eltra Glide, sweety on the back, tunes jamming some old rock-n-roll, saddle bags filled with water bottles....we got PASSED by some bicyles!

But not your average peddle-bike riders, these were top-of-the-line racing style 10-speed's riding in close pack formation and making speeds of 40+ mph...very impressive!

That's a great idea. I'm sure the tourists stopped to take photos or cyclists cruising through the loop really couldn't wait to get punted into the desert by a Ford. I'm sure 'dem girls really got impressed, too..

Mr LAG himself! I'll definitely check Zion out, aiming to drive up there early morning and then swing by lake Mead on the journey back.

Anyone know what the lake itself is like, ie: can you go swimming/rent small boats etc or just chill on the beach? Will probably do that a separate day if it's worth it

I was planning not to visit vof since i will be visiting rrc, however i changed my mind upon reading this thread, thanks all.

What do you recommend in June/July for the las Vegas - vof - Hoover dam route?

a) 15 to vof in the morning than coming back through northshore or
b) Hoover dam and northshore in the morning/afternoon and 15 in the evening?

Which company are you renting nice cars?

Does someone recommend www.bhlasvegas.com? Thanks.

There is no beach like you are thinking of that I have ever seen at Lake Mead. You have to remember, it's a recently man-made lake (from a geological standpoint) so there are no natural beaches w/sand, shells, etc. like you'd find at an ocean or a lake like one of the Great Lakes in the USA.

I've never rented anything there but it is inconceivable to me that you couldn't rent a boat or at least a jet ski (I seen plenty of people jet skiing on Lake Mead).

you could do both in a day, they're only about 1 1/2 hours apart. Red Rock is pretty to drive thru but, unless you plan on hiking around Red Rock, there isn't much else to do there other than look at stuff from the car which wouldn't take that long. VofF has more to get out and look at.

b is the better choice imo. One thing to remember: if you are here during Electric Daisy Carnival in June, the traffic around the LV Motor Speedway (which is just off of I-15 a little north of LV) could be terrible even driving south.

I know you can rent houseboats. You don't want too small a boat. It's a big lake and weather can whip up rough water in a hurry. Is it that hard to google?

we rented a ski boat in October of 2012, just went to the marina on the west side of the lake, accessed off of Boulder Highway. Probably better to make a reservation but we just played it by ear.

Went early on a Friday morning and paid a deposit ($200?) and it was an open bow ~16' with like an 125hp outboard. Guy shows you the basics and off you go.

Moved out pretty good maybe 30-40mph. Got to see the dam from the back side and most of the lake in a couple hours, IIRC it's a 2 hr minimum, since it was early (the winds tend to kick up in late afternoon) and a weekday the water was very calm and not many people on the lake.

Totally worth it and one of my best memories of vegas.
