Total, I spent $145 (round trip from BWI->LAS in early January), $82 (2 nights at the Excalibur w/ Resort fees & taxes), $70 (Hyundai Elantra rental from Enterprise). That $400 "screening" trip made things way easier when I decided to pack up and make the drive out.
This is the winning advice. You need to see the area for yourself. Blocks around the Strip can be hit and miss. The advice you get from others isn't going to be perfect. What I consider terrible might be acceptable to you and vice versa.
I have a friend that lives in the apartments just behind and slightly east of Hooters. It is nice but it has airport noise. Those are the kinds of things you need to see and hear for yourself before making such an important decision.
Keep in mind anything in the blocks east of the Strip will be at the end of a runway. If it were me, I would look down towards South Point.
