Actually serious as I can't decide what numbers because any number seems as good as any.

I'm in an office pool and I also bought tickets just for the fiancee and me. I bought not only Mega Millions but Powerball too. It's like $60 million and that's still life changing money.

If we win Mega Millions, at the press conference I'm going to be like that lady from MF Global. What are you going to do with the money? I take the fifth. Are you going to travel? I take the fifth. Are you staying where you are? I take the fifth.

how no one has picked 4,8,15,16,23, 42 yet leads me to believe no one wants to win. I unfortunately can't participate because I am in Italy :-/

Sorta actually happened. Old fart bought a couple tickets with his magic numbers on them. Then forget he bought the tickets, so he went and bought a couple more. Yep, his magic numbers were drawn. He had two tickets with the winning numbers, but there was one other winner. He won 2/3s of the jackpot (and a second place prize and a few others.)

Lucky moran.

Cash Option or Payout?

I bought 10 of each. Calculations as of yesterday would be approximately...

385 Million 1 time cash payout option
or
25 Million a year for 20 years payout option

I think I would rather win on the payout option.... gives you 20 years to figure out what to do with all of that money. Although trying to figure out what to do with 385 Million would be a good problem to have.

GL everyone!

This is the first time I've ever bought lottery tickets. Being from Alaska I never had the chance before, but probably wouldn't have anyway knowing what the odds are of winning. The odds against winning are 175,711,536 to 1 and the possible payoff is $640,000,000 to 1 so I figure it could be a good bet.

I realize the Nevada casino owners don't want competition from the lotteries but I couldn't help but wonder why they would not want this kind of traffic in their casinos. I think they are hurting themselves by standing in the way of a state lottery plus the school district could use the money.
Good grief, I'm gonna set up a website buylotteryticketsfromme.com. I bought mine this afternoon at my local gas station with zero wait. Just walked in and up to the counter and bought 'em.

I'll charge people a flat 50 bucks plus 5% of the ticket cost.

Just fine thanks. And any financial adviser would tell you to take the lump sum. But what do I know, I'm just a club host.

I got my tickets for both groups I'm in and got right back to Nevada. Hit the john and burned a $20 in some crappy Laughlin casino and headed home. All told it was around 3.5 hours.
The reason California tickets are superior is that AZ charges state income tax on wins, including for out of state winners. So 6% of your $640M will be going to the fine citizens of Arizona. California exempts lottery wins from state tax. So my tickets are worth more than your tickets, even though I had to wait in line for an hour (I didn't go to Primm, obviously, where the lines were 5 hours).

Not always that simple. You can often sell an annuity to a company for a larger lump sum than the lottery will give you. So it may be better to take the 26 payments even if you want the lump sum, and find a company that'll pay you more than the lottery's $462 million for it. Though the very size of this prize may preclude most such companies from participating... they could have a hard time coming up with >$462M.

I'll make an appointment with Russ Fox to discuss the details on Monday after I win tonight.

These look great! How well are they working? Is it easy to adjust the amount that comes out? Are they easy to use?

Well. Pool 1 at 161 entries found a value of $7. Pool 2 at 60 is worth $2. Well below EV. Lotto bad beat I guess.

I hope you all did better!

Removing jackpots over half a million simulations, pool 1 averaged $26.69 and pool 2 averaged $8.97. Bad beat I say!

There will almost certainly be mutliple winners, so the amount will be more manageable. If not, you can create a CDO-like mechanism where you can sell pieces any size you want.

If I win I'm not going to lock it away in some stupid retirement fund. I'm going to stimulate the economy by SPENDING it!
