Like him or not, Harry was a very popular Senator in Nevada. He accomplished a lot for Southern Nevada.

Maybe your 80% wanted it renamed the "Sharron Angle Airport" ?

Fwiw, I was a contributor to "Friends of Harry", even though I abhored his attempt to federalize and regulate online poker.
Here are two:

Read the threads, too. Or read any social media threads. It is nearly universal that Las Vegas International should be the name.

Your argument will be that this is not scientific, and not everyone that participated is a local. That is accurate, but all the polls are in this range, and there was not enough time to do a scientific poll. This is as good as it is going to get, and the opinion of people likely to use the airport is as important as the residents' opinion.

You ask why I think it is a more moderate position. For one, any libertarian will say naming anything after politicians is a bad idea. And of the people that I have seen make a bigger deal of this, most are not otherwise political, especially for candidates or parties.

What name would a libertarian pick for a presidential library?

For everyone now saying "airports should never be named after people", how many of you were expressing this sentiment over the past several years and decades in favor of removing the McCarran's name?

If you think it's generally fine to name airports after people, Reid is obviously more worthy of this honor than McCarran. It's not just all the disgusting views and positions that McCarran held. It's that Reid is a much more historically important national figure, probably the most important national public official in Nevada's history.

If you genuinely believe that airports should never be named after people, I can understand this sentiment. But I am suspicious of the fact that so many such people have just come out of the woodwork now when they could have been campaigning to remove the McCarran name (and all other names on airports) all along.

Haha. Well, if there is an obvious reason for it, that is different. I suppose I should have said anything like this.

I've supported renaming the airport since I've learned of the current name's issues. The entire time, something generic using the city's branding has been my choice. That avoids having the same issue in a generation.

You're right. If there was a rule that it had to be named after someone, it's hard to argue that anyone could beat out Reid.

I do feel like there are some exceptions to my politician naming ban. For example, William Hartsfield's vision is the reason Atlanta is a transportation hub and the busiest airport. He deserves that honor because that airport was his built on his hard work building up that segment of the city's economy. Without him, it probably does not happen. And Atlanta waited until after his death to do it.
