I saw a magazine article, in Trader Daily I think, that mentioned a half dozen high quality cigar shops in Vegas.

Many WaMu's. Visit www.wamu.com, click on "locations" and do the obvious. I see none that I'd call pleasant walking distance from the strip. Maryland and Flamingo may be the closest.

Quick question about furnature stores in Vegas. I'm from Vancouver and want a new desk chair but will be in Vegas for like 3 months so might as well buy it here and bring it home. I obv want an aeron or freedom or something like that. Does anybody know of any good office stores, ergonomic stores etc that might sell them?

Thanks a ton

I'm coming to Vegas by myself for 10 days in June and am gonna slum it this year. I am looking for a place that is within safe walking distance of the Rio and cheap. My guess right now is Gold Coast, I recall that being right next door to the Rio and it looks like I can stay for around $50 a night average. I also see suggestions here for the extended stay place but I am unsure if it is close enough to walk by myself. Free internet would be a huge plus. Any help would be greatly appreciated

I checked around the forum, I didn't find too much: Is there a way to get cheaper tickets to "O" than buying straight from the Bellagio? I tried to get some tickets last summer and they were sold out. Is there a better cirque show?

I'm french and I plan to move in in LV next december with some friends poker players but I don't know what to do with the VISA. Is a tourist VISA okay ? Can I extend it as long as needed ?

wat... i mean i know what this guy is asking but wat? seriously bro if you are foreign i doubt the best place to move first in the states is vegas. i mean unless you are a ****ing awesome poker player. i might be totally wrong but that was my first impression. i wouldnt recommend most english speakers move to vegas no less someone who isnt a citizen yet.

Well, I can certainly sympathize with the desire to move to Vegas for a long term stay/vacation, so I give him that.

You'd probably better check with your embassy or consulate on the visa question. You normally cannot legally work on a tourist visa, and while there's nothing I am aware of to keep you from playing poker, you won't be able to get a pay-the-bills type of job if the poker playing doesn't work out as well as expected. Also I believe any large tournament wins (over $2000, is it?) require a large tax withholding for foreigners, which you might not be able to get back for a long while. Cash games should not be an issue as far as I am aware.

I am not sure of the current status of tourist visas and how or if they can be renewed. If it's anything like Japan, your tourist visa will be good for 90 days or so and you might be able to renew it once or twice, but it is probably a lot harder to justify that in America after September 11. Again I am not sure how the US manages it, but here you have to leave the country and re-enter to get another 90 day tourist stamp. And if you do that more than once or twice you get more scrutiny from immigration and it becomes harder to get it approved.

Hopefully there is someone reading the thread who has done something similar and can comment with first-hand knowledge.

Following up:

Check out the web pages from the US State Department on visas:

Visitor Visas

Visa Waiver Program

France is a member of the visa waiver program, so you can show up with a valid passport and get a 90-day visitor stamp without a visa, though you may need to demonstrate sufficient funds to be able to stay and afford a return ticket. You can't extend this visitor stamp, though, so if you want to stay longer than that you'll need to leave the country and re-enter.

You can still apply for a regular tourist visa, I believe, which can be extended or converted to a student or working visa later. I don't know how difficult it is to get one or extend one. Again, immigration may give you a hard time if you want to extend, and they may wonder why you are applying for a tourist visa if you say you are just coming for a 3-week vacation (for example).

aren't you way more likely to be allowed to stay in the usa (semi-) permanently if you aren't a full-time gambler?

Ah, yeah, probably so. I assumed he was thinking of an extended vacation instead of something permanent.

yeah, I don't want to stay permanently, just for 9 month or maybe a year. I will be living thanks of poker, mainly (90% ?) online though (I play poker for a living for a year now and I make about $40k per month so there won't be any problem imo).

tyty for your answers, v nice to you guys.

90 days is no problem at all. Just show up with a passport and you're in using the visa waiver, but you MUST return within 90 days and there are no extensions possible--they are apparently very strict about it and failure to return within 90 days can result in them banning you from returning to the US for many years.

For 6mo it will require a B2 tourist visa which should also be no problem at all to get.

More than 180 days on a B2 visa will be at the whim of US bureaucrats. No idea how easy it would be to get a 9mo or 12mo B2 visa. I gather that tourist visas longer than 6mo are not normal, but are possible. And yeah, you might be able to get a 6mo visa and then get it extended, but you need to be prepared to leave if they refuse.

Note that many online poker sites that do not permit US players will not let you play, either, when you're in the US. That could be a big issue.

I found an Emerald Suites by the Orleans. The prices are about $30 per night if I book more than three nights in a row. It's basically an apartment with bedroom, living room, and full kitchen all seperate rooms. Is that area totally ghetto? I figure I'll probably need a car unless it's walkable to the Orleans and then can I catch a shuttle?

MGM Signature. But it's pricey.

If you need super cheap and have a car, I liked Eastside Cannery. Larger than normal rooms, clean and a bit modern in appearance, fridge in each one, and inexpensive room service. That place is empty on weekdays and you won't feel cramped. Super easy access out the back door to the self park.
