If you are in the middle of the class, at a middle of the pack (or lower) law school...and you don't have some incredible skill or connection...you are very likely to face very bleak prospects.
A lot of attorneys make $40K a year or less. So if that is your fate, why not take a bit less $$$ and do your own thing? Far better to make $35K a year playing poker, moving around the country, talking & joking with people, than looking at papers & a computer screen ALL day (doing low level legal work) for $42K a year with minimal benefits.
Neither situation is good or ideal, but better to be your own boss for just a bit less money?
