If you are going to book a trip to Vegas, use the software and site - Travelaxe.com. It is an aggregator site that looks at all the deals going on at the time and makes it easy to get the best price. It also has good information regarding location on the Strip. For example, I got a room at the Trop (which was sleepable, but nothing fancy) for $340 for 4 nights, Weds - Saturday ... that's pretty good for a stay that include 2 weekend nights.

Also, those quoting prices, they really go up and down depending on the dates. If you are willing to wait until the last minute, you can check Travelaxe or other similar sites or the nicer hotels and find that they may have some cheaper prices due to occupancy issues. Also, Mon - Thurs is a lot cheaper than Fri - Sat. Most of the hotels don't charge a straight per night fee ... they charge different amounts for different nights, depending on demand.

Finally, if you are just going to play cards with buddies, I like the Flamingo because of location and pool. You are only going to be in your room for a few hours each day, so who cares what it is like so long as it is sleepable.

to add to NCAces post..another excellent aggregator site..that gives some of the most honest reviews of hotels I have found and has a large base of members to give reviews

I prefer TripAdvisor to tell me the value of a hotel room (at least if I should stay there) to all others

Never heard of this travelaxe.com business, I'll give it a try.

Not sure where some people have been staying or their level of acceptable...but unless something has changed, The Flamingo has always had more than acceptable rooms

FWIW we needed a room last year on day 1B of the WSOP ME, needed to reserve it that same day, and found the best deal available was at the Rio!

i wouldnt mind knowing WEC's recommendations for an inexpensive place to stay by the week (not the day) in PHOENIX, near a casino or near a city bus going to one. also id like him to tell me if the Video BJ machines in phoenix shuffle after every hand or if u can count the cards on them like u can at the stratosphere.

Might be because I liked the city, but it wasnt a bad place.
The only problem is:
I am the oldest of three children, so whenever we wanted to go get something to eat and walked through the casino the security were chasing us, so we children didnt see any gambling... :/
I will also assume your still a virgin.

It is amazing what a difference in your impression of a place an old CRT versus say a new plasma or LCD can make in a hotel room. For business travel I am always extremely disappointed with a hotel if the TV's are old CRT's and I now avoid chains that have not upgraded.

Just FYI for anyone coming for a long stay during the WSOP. The Platinum hotel is working on putting together a WSOP Package for guests. This hotel is actually a condo/hotel so the rooms are huge and include a full kitchen, laundry, etc. It's a smoke free hotel with no casino. Definitely the place to stay if you are looking to "get away" from Vegas while not at the Rio. The hotel is directly behind Ballys on Flamingo (so it would probably be a 10 dollar cab ride to the Rio). I know the front desk manager there- Melissa at702.636.2501- call her and tell her that you are looking for a long term deal because of the WSOP and she'll hook you up. I doubt it'll be as cheap as the Rio or whatever, but it's much nicer/cleaner/bigger and of course, the kitchen is key.

WOW

Who found this old thread and dug it up

Been awhile since it had been bumped up. The thread still reflects my feelings on these hotels that I have visited over the past many years up to a few months ago last time I was in Vegas and stayed at Paris.

Well this is a Vegas Thread.....but first remember Casino Arizona (the only real place to play poker in Phoenix) play's poker at the 101 & Indian Bend location

Kinda a tough place to play without a car as Metro Bus service to Casino is non-existent I think (someone can correct me), although they do have a Casino scheduled bus that has daily pick-ups in Johnson Ranch, Queen Creek, East Mesa and Apache Junction

They are building a Hotel Resort right at the Poker Casino, but will not be open til 2010.

Casino Arizona used to have some discounts at a couple hotels in the area, but they are driving distance, not walking distance (Im not sure what they are doing now--they used to list on website but I see they are gone). Mostly, I have just driven up and played and drove home in the last 6 months, and when I stay overnight I have been using some frequent stay card points with a hotel in Scottsdale.

Also, remember it is a great place to play, but NO cash NL. Although they recently have been playing some great spread Limint if you do not mind that.

You best bet is to call up the Card Room, tell them your situation, because they are really helpful

PS I have zero idea how BJ Machines shuffle in Phoenix or anywhere else. If I want relaxation from poker I play the cute little 5c machines at $2.25 a clip (and mostly at Harrahs in Phoenix since I have a card there)

Can anyone tell me if "the 20 dollar trick" is worth trying at Imperial Palace. I am not even sure if there are different levels of rooms there.

Best luxury value dollar for dollar in Vegas is now the M Resort, you will need a car to get to and from the strip but boy is it worth it, the views are amazing and the pool is one of the best in Vegas.

I used to have some success (a couple years ago), but lately the check-in agents have said there was nothing they could do for me. They didn't accept the money, though, so no harm done.

In addition to the rooms in the main tower, there is also a separate motel structure located at the back of the property, behind the parking garage. Those rooms are called "Capri rooms" and I would probably try the $20 trick to get out of staying in one. I can't say with any certainty whether it would work, though.

With a caveat that the Harrah's Carnival Court is really loud until 4am or later, so it's not ideal to be on that side of the building if you plan to sleep during that time. (Not that you should be sleeping during that time...)

The strip is ok if you are doing a big convention like CES. The room prices are really high on the strip during the conventions so my son and I stayed at the Fitz one CES for 17 bucks a night when the cheapest strip hotels were over 150. The Fitz was clean and quiet enough and the big advantage was that all the traffic was going the opposite way and it was an easy drive in and out of the convention center. I wouldn't stay downtown if it was a vacation or I was bringing the wife.

I stayed there for a week or so with my wife last year and it`s a great place to stay. It`s so nice to get away from the gambling for a while. And, having an own kitchen and a washer and a dryer is very nice.

Yes, I forgot to mention that. But I think it's worth to put up with the sound from 12-4a in exchange for 20 hours of nice view (disclaimer: WTF are you doing in your room during the day but w/e)

Yeah those Motel Rooms are old and they suck. I think the last hotel to have these besides the IP was just torn down (Stardust).

Doesn't the Trop still have motel style rooms in the back?
