A decade ago, I use to enjoy the Sportsbook at the Las Vegas Club.

You could get a seat, plus inexpensive beer and food.

Anyone have any any good, or bad Las Vegas Club stories ?

I've spent a bunch of time there. They have a decent amount of +EV games.

Before I moved to LV, my wife and I got mailers for LVC. It was something like I got free room and $300 and she got free room and $150. It was maybe 2007 or 2008.

We were actually staying at Caesars Palace but checked into the hotel rooms to get the free play. When we got to the front desk they figured out what we were up to and just let us get one room.

Even though we weren't staying there, I wanted to see how bad the room was. The carpet was nasty. There was a cigarette put out on the desk. There was a slug in the rusty bathtub. I'm going to guess nobody had used this room in a long time but it had the squatted in look. It was the nastiest room I've ever seen.

The hotel closed a few years ago. For its last few years it was only open on peak weekends.

Tinoco's used to have a lobster claw game. You paid a buck or two and tried to catch a lobster. If you caught it, the restaurant would cook it for free. They used to put a sign on it saying not to play it after hours. People still did. I'm not sure what the people thought they would do with a live lobster at 2am.

LVC used to be a happening place. It has been neglected about 10 years now. It is kind of like what happened to Sahara. It has been milked as far as it can in its current condition. They haven't invested a cent in the place that they didn't have to in many years. I'm glad someone with success downtown has their hands on it.

I haven't seen anything about when it will close...most reports say sometime in the future for renovations. Where are you seeing Monday?

I am a regular there and in local gaming media. An employee at Tamares told me this off the record. It will close at 1am on Monday.

The Las Vegas Club...would hate to see it go. I remember going there in July or August of 2001. The Diamondbacks were in a pretty good division race with the Giants and the Club had them at 20-1 to win the World Series...by far the best price I found. I thought with Schilling and Johnson, they had a chance, so I got a ticket for $50. A few months later, I sent my ticket and they sent me a check for $1,050.

I stayed there for a few nights one year when I was trying to do my trip super cheap. Rooms were about $30 a night. The room was spartan to say the least, complete with liquid soap. I always envisioned the Club as a place where down-on-their-luck players could get a good night's sleep and a shower with just a little bit of a windfall, along with the hope for a better tomorrow.

I stayed there when I was transitioning into middle age, and well, physical things started happening unintentionally and totally unexpectedly, like farts. So one night I was in the elevator heading to the casino floor when something suddenly came out...and well-scented at that. I probably turned white as a sheet while wishing that the elevator would continue barreling down the shaft non-stop. But no such luck. It slowed to a stop on the sixth floor and about four people came on. Nobody said a word, but that was a long trip down. And so it goes at the Las Vegas Club.

I once spun $200 into $1400 there one afternoon on a craps table before having to catch a flight home.

I think they used to publicize the worlds most liberal 21. 3:2 obv, but you could also keep re-splitting aces, double on split aces, and other more gimmicky stuff.

"Most Liberal" isn't 3-2. It is even money except suited pays 2-1. You can double down on any number of cards and surrender, as well as hit/split/double split aces. There is also a six-card charlie.

It used to stand on all 17's but now it hits. The edge is over 1% in this "most liberal" game. It is still spread at Plaza and for the remainder of the weekend at LVC until they close table games.

The place needed some lights. The crap tables were so dark that you couldn't read the dice after you threw them.

The Upper Deck was a decent coffee shop, heavy on Hawaiian cuisine such as Portuguese sausage, spam, and loco moco.

Staying at the Golden Nugget 20 years ago or so I wandered over there about 7AM on a Sunday to play their "liberal" 21 deck game. The gimmicky rules were interesting, but the deck penetration was lousy. What made the morning entertaining was the customer base of the bar next to the blackjack table, primarily strippers getting sh*tfaced after their nightshift at the bump and grind joint next door. Most were scary looking, must have been a nasty strip joint.

The sport book was decent, with a good collection of sports memorabilia.

Great quote about LVC from vegastripping.com:

"It appears that they've since realized that the gift shop and bruise covered strippers strategy wasn't working out."

This is a big plus for downtown. The new owners completely turned around the D (Fitzgeralds was a dump on par with LVC).

My small-stakes mini-heist story at LVC:

About two years ago I had some matchplay coupons at Las Vegas Club. I remember it was the first time my wife had come along with me to Vegas, and we had just finished crushing the 'Free $50 Matchplay with Allegiant Airline Ticket' offer (plus some other matchplay) at Golden Gate for a cool $300 to start off the trip.

We headed over to the LVC and pulled up to a $10 BJ table with matchplay coupons in hand. I handed the dealer $20 to be used for my $10 matchplay bet as well as one for my wife. The dealer takes the money and sets it aside, counts out 4 red chips, hands them to me, then takes the same $20 bill again, re-sets it aside, and gives 4 more red chips to my wife! We set out our $10 bets and $10 matchplays, win our hands, and quickly colored up... somehow managing to cash out $80 from a $20 buy-in!

Probably the least ethical thing I've done in a casino, and felt guilty/paranoid for the duration of our visit downtown. I can only imagine that this is the reason LVC has gone under.

Most of the operations will close Sunday night after swing shift, sometime around 1am. The slots will remain open for a short time after that. The doors will be completely locked by the end of swing shift on Wednesday. The only people on the schedule after swing shift on Sunday are slot attendants, cage and the Fremont St bar. No servers or inside bartenders are scheduled so I guess if you're going to play slots or VP on Monday or Tuesday then you won't be getting a drink. No operation departments are scheduled after Wednesday.

Tamares confirmed the closing date today. The Las Vegas Sun ran an interview with Derek Stevens where he said mid October but Tamares confirmed what employees have known since Friday morning, operations would wind down after this weekend.

Thanks for the info, PokerAddict. Sucks for the workers to get that info on such short notice. Hopefully they will make up for it in the long run if the place becomes a more attractive place for people to go.

I do have one question for you....in the thread on the Riviera you said employees had to be given 60 in that scenario before the place could close. Can you tell me what the difference in the 2 scenarios is? Is it because who was buying the Riviera? Thanks again...love reading stuff from people in the know. Saves me a lot of Googling.

The WARN Act requires 60 days notice to be given to employees under many circumstances, which include a controlled closure of business. A shop must have 100 or more full time employees losing jobs. LVC doesn't qualify.

The dealers are mostly contracted through a company that provides party pit girls. Those dealers will be worked into schedules at other casinos that use these party pit dealers. Most or all of the slot attendants, security and cage employees, have room at Plaza, the sister property across Main Street.

These employees often worked in both places anyway. For example, during slow periods, there would be three slot attendants on duty between the two casinos. If there was a hand pay that required a second attendant, one would walk across the street to verify if the second attendant was not on site. Security would move to the other casino if an incident warranted. I'm told some of the LVC games will get moved over to Plaza so maybe the hours will be close to a wash for those departments.

Most or all of the layoffs at LVC involve bartenders and cocktail servers, a department with 25-30 employees because there is just one bar and no restaurants. The is no room at Plaza for the beverage employees. The number of layoffs for the entire closure is somewhere in the range of that department, perhaps a little higher, but does not trigger the WARN Act.

For five years, owners of The D Las Vegas talked to officials with the Tamares Group, expressly GM Jonathan Jossel, about buying the Las Vegas Club.... Friday it was announced that Greg and Derek Stevens snapped up the old hotel-casino at Main and Fremont streets.

That shutdown is happening sooner than expected. Though Derek Stevens said today that it would be 60 days before the Las Vegas Club would close, Jossel said plans are in place for the hotel’s table games to close by Sunday night, and the full casino would cease operations by Wednesday night, pending approval by the state Gaming Commission.
Asked if that meant Las Vegas Club’s casino would be entirely shut down by Thursday, Jossel said, “That is the plan, yes.”

Earlier, Stevens talked of his plans to take over the property.

“We want to evaluate the best use of the property and how to renovate what we have; we need to look through and look at the condition of the structure, that kind of thing,” Stevens said during a phone conversation today. “Tamares is still operating under a 60-day lease, and they are going to wind down operations and move most of their employees over to the Plaza (which also is a Tamares property).”
OK, now it is clearer.
I thought it would be open for 60 days, for legal reasons, but the legal reasons do not apply.
Thank you for clearing that up.

I was allowed to shoot the last craps roll last night at LVC. They gave me a small package as a gift for playing at the end. I opened it when I got home and it was the dice setup, based on the time I got it, maybe the one I shot with. That was very cool of the pit boss. I wish I knew what it was and who he is so I could thank him again.

Las Vegas Club, one of downtown’s oldest casinos, closes

Quote:
Las Vegas Club Final Night

It lacked the energy that accompanied the Riviera’s closure on the Strip earlier this year, but the Las Vegas Club’s final evening was still marked by a strong sense of nostalgia among those who were there.

Gambling writer John Mehaffey said he became a repeat customer of the Las Vegas Club after finding a video poker machine he liked there years ago. Taking a break from playing at one such machine late Wednesday, he said the workers helped keep him coming back.

“The employees here made the place,” he said. “The more time went on, the more appreciative they were of the people who still came here. They took care of the regulars for sure.”

The Las Vegas Club, which traces its roots to 1930, is now in the hands of Derek and Greg Stevens, the brothers who also control the D and the Golden Gate resorts. Derek Stevens said in a previous interview that they did not purchase the casino name, so whatever he eventually reopens at the corner of Main and Fremont streets will be called something else.
