That's another key . . . learning from your experiences.

Good run in the Aria tourney!

I'm going to take a break from this thread to focus on myself. I'll be back in a couple of days for an update on me.

Thank you so much guys you've been really helpful

Please don't go to the pit to get over the tournament. If you're feeling spewy just go back to the UHaul
01-25-2020 , 11:21 PM
Yeah for a steady earn tournaments, particularly low stakes tournaments have got to be the worst. Nothing will psychologically break you down faster than bubbling or min cashing these over and over because you keep getting 2 or 3 outted. Wasting all that time and money over and over again. When you could've just been steady growing your roll.

I would play cash only and take a shot once a year at the milli maker or something.

And I love tournaments.

You are completely right that this choice shouldn't be a last resort, and if I stayed away from the casino when I first got the hint my employer was planning on letting me go (5 months ago), I would be in a much more comfortable position to attempt this. But really the constant fear of being fired compelled me even more to keep playing poker, even if I didn't have the money for it (which is critical).
this is sheer comedy genius. Acron I don't know who you are but this is extremely well written and insightful/hilarious thank you. (definitely not doubting your quest, reading on further now) I admire your human spirit and sense of adventure

Didnt read any new posts.

Just wanted to drop an update. I busted 2 tournaments at the aria for $380 total and the last tournament, my slow played queens got cracked by flopped jacks (flapjacks?).

From now I'm deciding to stay away from tournaments primarily because I cant leave if I get stuck with good players. And the lower buyin tourneys have an annoyingly high rake, I don't feel like dumping so many hours to win so little.

My night didn't end there. I played 2/5 at the wynn for 2 hours and made a profit of $1800. The money came from overt LAGs and a bluffing drunk dude.

Going to stick to NL and hunting fish. I hate how much FL I played in MN. To profit at FL you need a majority of the table to be worse than you, but in NL you can be the 2nd worst player and win by just zoning in on the 1 guy worse than you (as long as he isnt afraid to ship it by bluffing or hero calling).

I'll include a pic of my chip stack at the end of my first ever 2/5 session in my upcoming trip report. I'm pretty proud of it not going to lie.

Good call on the tournaments. And congrats on your new 2/5 win. You seem to at least be aware of table selection which is important. That's the beauty of the strip, all those rooms within walking distance. Just keep hopping from room to room until you spot your next target and take their chips. Rinse and repeat. Sometimes you may have to get a seat and immediately request a table change while you play tight and get to sit down with the player you want. And stay away from the pits, especially if you go on tilt. Good luck!

Beautiful beautiful naivety! Nothing wrong with that just enjoying reading someone going through it for the first time, all over again.

Don’t get too up or down emotionally or too judgey of any room or player types until you get a real feel for the town and the locals and the tourist etc. just try to have fun, take each day as it comes to you, don’t overthink it over analyze table/room selection just go with what feels right and move on when that changes.

Other than making sure you pay your debts and stay safe out in the streets and at your hotel/motel, don’t over think this just try to relax and take the journey how it comes - that’s how you ended up here to start with, right?

So it looks like he is up $1620 after 2 days. Well ahead of the $300/day plan.

As generally a 2d worst player, I know you also will still need to watch against shipping it by chasing to expensively, bluffing or hero calling the 7 better players also. As your opponents play better, you are less likely to get a good price for chasing, less likely to be obviously bluffed, and less likely to get paid off when you hit the river.

Should he put a down payment on a Lyft rental yet?

All joking aside, well done AC!

Stay away from the pits, hookers and blow.

Ultimate goal: no tunnels!

We don't know how much he spent at local dispensaries tho.

I had thought of that . . . not to mention Starbucks, Subway, Chipotle, SW Steakhouse . . . all very tempting.

I'm staying optimistic and giving AC the benefit of the doubt.

Let's hope he got a good night's rest.

Hey man glad to see this wasn’t a troll and you going with the gamble. Just wish you didn’t have a rerun ticket. Anyways, def stay away from live mtt. I play mtt for living online and knowing how variance works in mtt coupled with the time waste live , no way man don’t even waste your time with that. Stay strong stay hungry don’t get bored and just move up stakes. I see you already talking about 5/10. Make sure to take some breaks and not get brunt out . Thanks for updating. Should be a killer thread! And wit that loan amount you could always come to a cheap country and play low stakes online with way less pressure. I have been living in Medellin Colombia last 5 years. Much prefer this to live grind. You could keep your expenses low and only need to make like 3k month. Good luck bro. Keep updating us please through the good and the bad . You a legend

It will be interesting to see what games you play going forward. Once a player moves up in level it can become difficult to play smaller again. Your goal was to game select but are you capable of playing 2/5 Wynn one session and then playing 1/2 Bally's the next? Perhaps that's too big of a stretch, but how about 2/5 Wynn --> 1/3 Venetian?
01-26-2020 , 05:22 PM
i mean it's obvious he's trying to run up a huge roll quick.

i wouldn't be surprised if he tries 5/10 after his first losing cash session

I'd share my situation, but nobody really cares (nor should they), but I'm in a spot where I understand OP and am rooting for him.

The problem is there are just so many ways for this to go bad and the above quoted is a real danger.

When I was building my sports betting roll this was actually the biggest problem, for me anyway. After a particular couple of weeks of running white hot and upping my bets it was really, really hard to drop back down when things leveled off.

I just see so many ways for this to go bad for OP and so few that it actually goes right. I still find myself rooting for him, but the fear of the inevitable is very real.

Good luck, I hope you are killing it 10 years from now. I hope you aren't broke 10 days from now.......

his only chance to pay off monthly interest on 30k loan (~$725) + rent + food + ubers + other bills is to play 2/5 or higher

rent <-- Should be able to find roommates for cheap rent
food <-- Food comps should be able to cover all this right? Maybe supplement with cheap food (PB&J, rice & beans, ramen, etc) if necessary
ubers<-- WTF does he need to Uber for? He should have virtually everything he needs on the strip. So get a roommate that is a player or dealer and has a car and/or find a cheapish crappy place with a roommate near the strip.
other bills - There are no other bills!

30k loan
<-- That's ridiculous, no help for that

You're way overstating the easiness of finding cheap rent (or roomate) and the uber/transportation costs. Roomates you can trust don't grow on trees. Also LOL at your transportation example of "get a roomate that has a car" as if that makes someone your personal chauffeur or will be okay with you using their car free of charge lmao.... Or even be willing to let you bum a ride when there going to the strip for work without ponying up some gas money.

Desert Manor has been completely remodeled so not sure if OP can afford it, but that might be a good place to start. Walk over to uncapped 1/2 at GN. Get in those juicy Binions games in the summer. And you can take the bus over to the strip.

They also now have Wifi according to their website so you don't need to walk to Starbucks with the nursing students like OG Trooper

I'm not saying to trust anyone but I'm sure there are lots of dealers/players out there that would be willing to rent you a living area for $400/mo all blils paid.

Sure, probably pay some gas money but it's not that hard to find someone with a car. Anytime I go to Vegas I have someone wiling to drive me places. I've known players that have played full time out there for 6 months at a time with no car. I recall one of them staying at a place just like Desert Manor, but it was on the strip (or right off it) and I believe there are some lower priced places on Desert Inn just N of Encore too (perhaps that has changed).

Plus, isn't there public transportation? Buses can't be too expensive. Hell, Trooper was traveling the city on his boosted board and before that on a skateboard.

This is the worst idea ever and you can’t be convinced not to try it. You think you are the one percent that can be profitable even though there’s no data to support it.

I know the feeling. I once almost made a similar decision. But I walked it back at the last minute before I screwed up my life. I had to eat massive humble pie but I was able to do it.

The feeling in the pit of your stomach when you lose a buy in you need for shelter food transportation or a shower is the same feeling in the pit of your stomach when you get dumped by a long term girlfriend and lose a parent on the same day and you’re looking to face that multiple times a week.
