I'd pay $20 a night more for Vdara.

Staying at The Cromwell. It's pretty awesome IMO. Room isn't big if you need an area to entertain people but in terms of being nice and trendy it blows away Caesars Palace Octavius. Really love it.

stay at the D for like $35-40 a night and taxi/walk/bus or whatever to the rio and strip? or pay 120-140 a night for ballys/harrahs/palms/flamingo, etc?

also, how far is golden nugget from rio walk/taxi wise?

hmm, now that i think of it maybe ill just stay at the D or somewhere in the 35-50 range...and just rent a car for 20-35 a day....55-85 total a day for a cheaper hotel and a rental is sounding better than 120+ a night to stay on the strip/close to Rio....

just to confirm, no decent $40-70 a night spots close to rio? thanks

You're not going to find anything cheap by the Rio for those dates because the entire world is planning the Colossus. Your plan to stay downtown and rent a car is probably your best bet.

Prices for that time period seem to have gone up quite a bit in the past month or so.

Watch the resort and parking fees they're all different downtown. Your other option would be to stay at the motel 6/americans best value on trop or stay suites on dean martin depending on your tolerance for cheap hotels.

Another option is to check out Orleans, as they run a free shuttle to their sister property Gold Coast, which is next door to Rio.

Think someone had posted Gold Coast is sold out for those days.

Yeah, but Orleans might not be, and they run the shuttle to the Gold Coast, which would save the guy who asked some money on avoiding a rental.

It is sold out. However, I've seen this change as people go home busto so worth checking around that date.

You won't be able to rent a car anywhere near 20-35 per day total, at least not near the airport.

A quick Kayak search shows plenty of rentals below $25 per day, out the door.

Why? Is Caesar's Palace better? I'm looking for the nicest TR hotel for my wife and I. It'll all be comped. I have Nobu booked but can easily change it.

First of all, I will qualify what I say with the fact that I hate just about everything about Ceasars Palace and Caesars the company. I stayed at Nobu this week for work, and in years past have stayed at Augustus and Octavius. It has always been on the company dime, I wouldn't even consider staying there on my own. So if you're comped, good.

Nobu's advantage over Augustus and Octavius is location, as the elevators are right on the casino floor. That's about the only advantage I can think of. My problems with the place:

1. Temperature in the room. It's the old Centurion tower and the bones are still old. The AC was loud and ineffective. At no point in my four days was I able to get the room below 72 degrees, and that's with it being a modest 75-80 outside.

2. Service. I ordered room service breakfast, which showed up in a reasonable time. Wasn't that good, costs way too much, but that's a different matter. I called back to have them pick up and I needed a copy of my receipt. Had to call and let it ring through 4 or 5 times for several minutes each time before anyone would pick up, and then they never showed up anyway. This might very well be an overall "Caesars in bankrupt" problem and not Nobu-specific.

3. Housekeeping wasn't ready to clean my room until 7pm the first day. Again, a staffing problem.

4. There was no cold water from the sink. Just weird.

5. Internet hit or miss.

6. Weird elevator system that was frustrating the hell out of me until I figured it out.

7. Shower that you basically have to stand under to turn it on was a tad annoying.

The room itself was nice enough, not big but reasonably well-designed. It's not really designed for comfort though, and definitely not for any kind of laptop work (just a couch and coffee table). If that's a priority, definitely go Augustus/Octavius.

Next year I'll probably just go back to Augustus and deal with the hike. But really, and I mean this with all sincerity, **** Caesars.
