Does Vegas Make you fat? Does Vegas Make you fat?

I've been out here five months now and probably packed on 20 lbs. Too many buffets, too many all nighters at the poker table, etc.

Anyone else?

You make yourself fat. Eat better, and exercise more.

I think these things, in any location, would make you fat...try resisting them

so your question is post worthy but someone elses opinion doesn't matter?

it's your lifestyle that's making you fat. it has nothing to do with vegas, in fact, i'd bet people in vegas are typically in better shape than most other places in the US.

start working out and develop good eating habits.

I think the root of the problem lies in the fact that people don't like walking anywhere. Some poster jumped on my case when I said that Aria and MGM are a close walking distance and "practically across the street." If a <10 minute walk isn't close, then you're probably packing on pounds.

I don't think it is an awful question, and I don't think asking (or answering) requires one to implicitly reject personal responsibility for one's lifestyle choices (i.e. eating and exercising). There are places with a reputation for this kind of thing; personally I have no idea if Las Vegas is one of them.

Actually, I used to live somewhere with a bit of a reputation for men from outside losing weight, and women from outside gaining weight, and it seemed like a reasonably well earned reputation at that.

I don't know why I am even weighing in on this (pardon the pun). I don't really care if this forum is welcoming to new people or not. Blech.

I would've thought that Vegas would be a good place to lose weight, since it's so hot! I guess that's only true during the summers.

Last year I visited in June and in September, and that is the most heat I've ever been in, in my entire life. As a result, I realllly lost my appetite, and I assumed the same would happen to others.

I'm surprised at poster up there somewhere that said people in Vegas are probably more fit than other parts of the US. That's kind of scary, because whenever I'm in Vegas, I notice how much bigger people are (mostly in the gut area) compared to people in Canada. Mind you, my city is the most Americanized city of Canada, apparently, and we are definitely catching up in size. AND, I'm probably mostly seeing tourists when I'm in Vegas, vs. the locals, I guess.

OP - don't you get sick of the buffets? I enjoyed buffets the first couple times I was in Vegas, but I realllllly don't like them whatsoever. Once in awhile I'll go to a sushi buffet, but that's about it. I find the sickness I feel after eating at a buffet really isn't worth it at all. I'd rather eat normal portions of good quality food, than copious amounts of mediocre food AND feel like garbage afterwards.

Obviously I agree but where you live can make eating habits easier/harder. I lived in Chicago for a.while and gained some weight because I had amazing food places within blocks of my place. You'd have a higher chance of cheating on your women if you were constantly around hot single girls opposed to working around fat married hogs

Poker makes me lose weight. I can't be the only one that doesn't get hungry enough to get up to eat when I'm playing. I can barely unglue myself to use the bathroom. Plus the food is such a ripoff, I hate paying for it. That, and I'm a picky eater.

Online poker is another story though.

When I'm at the tables this is true. Playing constantly is probably a good thing.

When someone posts /end thread and uses a tone as to suggest that their response is the end all be all...then yes.

If anyone else is in the same boat and need extra ($$$) motivation maybe we can make a weight loss prop bet.

Switch from poker to craps. You burn more calories that way.

I read the title and came to post "you make yourself fat". I'm glad to see the first reply beat me to it.

OP - no, it isn't Vegas that's made you fat.

I totally agree with this.

Tiger Woods is not just a cheating husband with lots of money who thought he could do what he wanted and get away with it, no he has an addiction! It is not his fault.

Gaining weight is all about taking on more energy than you burn. A change in environment might cause your habits to change but it is your habits that are the cause of weight gain, nothing else.

You are in full control of what goes into your mouth and how much your body moves around.

My wife actually loses weight in LV. She never finishes more than 1/2 her meal (portion control) and gets too busy to snack. But I can see how life on the strip would be a food disaster. Portion control? Where? Healthy choices? Where?

And locals whining about walking makes me lol. (It's TOO far from the MGM parking lot to play the MGM room even if it is a soft room.) Pulleze!!

Does anyone use the hotel gyms b4 a poker session? Does anyone regularly walk the strip as they go from poker room to poker room (At least at the times you won't melt down.) Are there any places to get good, healthy portion controlled food on the strip? (the Spa menu at the "V"?) Do you take a 20 minute break from the table every two hours and just WALK around?

It would be worthwhile to share these and other suggestions to minimize the need of use for defib units in the hotels. (Last trip to LV I saw two chubby patrons -separately- down on the ground in the "V" receiving emergency care. One looked really bad.)

I'm trying to join the 10000 steps club. 10000 steps a day keeps the weight the and doctor away! (In theory.)

Yes if you continue eating like you're on vacation you will gain weight. Buffets should probably be avoided unless you're really good at selection and portion control.

My suggestion would be to have some idea when you get up in the morning as to how much you will eat, where you will eat, and how you will get some exercise that day. Then try to stick with the plan.
