If I want to stay in a suite in one of the main Strip hotels (say MGM Grand), would it be best to ask for a suite when booking, or to book a normal room and try for a cheap upgrage when we get there?

Also is there any advantage in booking early (we're going June next year)? Or do we get the same price and quality of room whenever we book?

The answer to question #1 depends on whether you want a suite guaranteed or are okay risking it. Also, depends on what type of suite you are thinking of (i.e. standard suite - penthouse suite).

The answer to question #2 is always book early and keep checking for deals throughout the year. You can always cancel a reservation if a better deal comes along. Case in point I have a room at Bellagio for October at $129/night based on a deal they were running in June. Same room is about $400 now.

Use fatwallet to find deals for the next year.

Sometimes last minute deals pop up that are terriffic, but I'd take Born2Run's advice. Book something early that can be cancelled without a penalty. Keep watching for special rates.

If I wanted a suite, I would book a suite. Why risk disappointment?

check directly at hotel site and run dates sometimes you can get a deal that way especially 48 hours or less before check in
