I don't know what balls cricket uses (and am too lazy to google it), but I think having an American baseball from an actual MLB game back home in old England might be worth something, memory/nostalgia/novelty wise. That said, my first inclination would be to give it away to nearby kid, and not expecting a beer out of it.

making decent time, should be in the valley in about 90 minutes

driving got a lot easier about 15 minutes after crossing the bay bridge

stopped at this viewpoint to have a quick drink of water and stretch my legs

it's pretty nice

That looks familiar, but it's been many years since I was over there. Did you turn east from the Stockon area, this picture is up that way ~1 hour?

honestly I followed what the satnav told me to do and have no real memory of what towns I went through

stopped again at the rim of the world viewpoint

this is quite something, and I'm not even in the park proper yet

Fantastic. Yosemite is beautiful. Haven't been there in years, though (like, 30). We hiked with packs and camped for a few days -- even caught trout for dinner

Thanks, I get that's what I was remembering. I'm pretty sure I found a place to stay in Groveland, then headed up to Yosemite the next morning.

Very nice. Mist Trail about kicked my ass. We went up a bunch of switchbacks on a different trail and then worked down to Mist Trail. So incredible there, I'm a little envious right now.

My wife and I did the Panorama hike (shuttle from Happy Isles to Glacier Point and then walk back down) and were very fortunate it didn't end badly. We were insufficiently layered up, each carrying just a light shell and a storm rolled in, dumping rain/hail and lightning on us. Cleared up, but we had to finish the hike wet and cold and the granite gets super slippery (we each slipped and fell at least once).

We got back to the valley floor as the sun was setting, bruised and dehydrated, but no major damage. Take more stuff than you'll think you'll need

ETA: Love the report so far, didn't want to sidetrack it!

ok phone signal died but I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did

anyway

have some more photos of the hike

it was bloody amazing - went up the mist trail and down John Muir trail

but it definitely kicked my arse

was hoping to get a pizza from Curry Village at the end of the hike, but all the restaurants there were closed, so I made the only logical decision and bought a can of beer from the gift shop to drink on the walk over to Yosemite Lodge

in my room now, going to crash for a bit then go look for food

my food expectations are low, but then that's not why I came here is it

ate an adequate poke bowl that was overpriced but no more so than all the other food here

plus it gets some more vegetables into me and I hear that's good for you (or at least less bad than if I'd had an overpriced and inevitably mediocre burger)

picked up another beer from the gift shop, going to drink it back in my room while watching the draft and then sleep

walking is tiring

Yosemite looks amazing - trying to figure out how to do it with a toddler in tow might be tough however so it may have to wait a few years.

Trip looks great so far - pretty sure I had the exact same flight of beer (definitely the same bar in Ghirardelli Square!) after a trip to the old arcade place when we were there in 2018 - good taste!

hiked up to Artist's point (fortunately a much shorter hike than the Mist Trail)

haven't seen a single other person on the trail

and the view is incredible

sitting here a while before I walk back down
