Learning PLO - Why? Learning PLO - Why?

I notice that a lot of the CR pros (stinger, aba, muddywater) play a lot of PLO. My question is, is this really worth it if ur still moving up in NL? did u guys learn it simultaneously or get to the pinnacle of NL n then learn PLO? ive played a bit of PLO n i agree competition is relatively softer n its a lot of fun (tho im sure that wears off just like for NL) but, say I'm playing 3/6NL now. i could take the time to learn PLO from say 1/2 and move to 3/6 as well or i could just play NL exclusively and get to 5/10. wouldnt the latter be strictly better money-wise?

I didn't start til I peaked in NL, but you said it in your post, the competition is weaker in PLO. A top player in a 1/2 PLO game can probably earn as much $ per hour as a top player at 3/6 NL, a 3 times higher winrate seems very reasonable. The variance is rough though so be careful.

thx for the response stinger! it was actually ur recent vid that inspired me to take PLO up again (i started learning a while ago but put it off due to the variance) but then the thought in my OP occured to me.

I agree JCL, PLO is a lot of fun to play, and the competition is weaker because many players do not know the game very well. Are you having trouble learning this game jcl? I know that I have a hard time playing the LAG style that is advocated by the CR instructors in the PLO vids.

PLO owns, the variance gets me down tho. I'm probably losing money @ the 100PLO game, but solid winner at 50PLO.

Explain how your winrate and variance can be higher at the same time.

you expect to win more at PLO, but typical wins and losses are much bigger than NLHE.

You can put your money in an interest paying checking account and perhaps get 2% interest. It is a low return and zero variance. You could buy a bond that pays 5% interest but which will vary in market value based on the movement of interest rates. The bond has a bigger "win rate" and higher variance.

i think the biggest problem newcomers that play a lot of NL have with plo is playing out of position and check calling a lot. This is a recipe for disaster in plo, so knocking that alone out could be the boost you need.

PLO is like partypoker 4 years ago, that's why.

I didn't say it couldn't, I wanted someone to explain to me exactly how it worked.
