So why even bother playing Day 1 when they can just do Colossus all in one trip for only a couple hundred more?

I think some of you ae waaaay overestimating this event. Of course, no one really knows for sure. I'm sure the folks at the WSOP thought their "Carnival" series from a couple years ago would have been a much bigger hit than it was. And I doubt many really saw how big Colossus would be that first year. So, you just don't know for sure till it happens.
In any case, this Giant event definitely seems to be geared towards rec players with its price point and weekend schedule. Yet, its a turbo format, it has no guarantee, is a 7:00pm to 3:00 am tourney and requires the player to come to vegas twice to make any serious money. These are all decidedly anti-rec-player factors. It really seems quite self-defeating.
In thinking it over, I don't think this will be nearly that popular. I imagine the first 4 starting flights will only get a few hundred entries each. The 7/7 flight will likely be the largest, but its on the same day as the primary ME satellite day and the Ladies event. The Rio can only accommodate ~5000 players at a time, so I don't see this final flight getting much over 1K. They may even have to cap it if those 1PM and 4PM satellites are heavily attended.
At this point, I just don't think the Giant will eclipse 2000 entries total. But I guess we'll have a better idea once that first flight is in the books.
