Fight for Poker Rights: Tuesday, June 7th:

Let's continue expanding this effort. Today's action is to ask five more people to participate in the daily action plan. If you joined today as a result of being asked by a respected poster yesterday, please PM fellow poker players here, email friends, ask friends at the local B&M or home game, etc, but let's all put our personal recommendation into this effort. The daily action plan takes very little time and there's no denying it's way +EV for the time invested.

Once done, please post here that you made the request, along with posting your personal commitment to participate in the action plan. Thanks!!

Recurring actions:

Let's continue to own a lot of Facebook pages (senators, Congressmen, Congressional committees, etc.):
  • The House Financial Services Committee's Facebook page is here.
  • Let's get some posts on the House Committee on Energy and Commerce page (here)
  • The Dept. of Justice's page is here.
  • Senators' FB pages: Senator Facebook Listing
  • We need lots of posts on the issue of poker and lots of "liking" of pro-poker comments.
The updated PPA pre-written letters are up. Let's all send these letters and encourage others as well These will be updated when Rep. Barton's poker bill is introduced to the House (in other words, soon), so let's all get these new letters out.

I posted this on all the FB pages:

Have you noticed that 95% of the posts on this wall are about Internet poker and requests for hearings for HR 1174? Please do what your constituents - i.e. your bosses - have asked

I have signed up as a dues paying member of the PPA.
I have blogged about the fight for poker players rights and will continue to do so.

I have just worked through this list of senators and posted the following message:

Quote:
Dear Senator xxxxxx,

Please support HR 1174, Internet Gambling Regulation, Consumer Protection, and Enforcement Act. This bill would create tens of thousand of industry jobs and bring in $40-$60 billion in much needed tax revenue over the next 10 years.

In addition, Congressman Joe Barton will soon be introducing an online poker bill in the House Committee on Energy and Commerce. I kindly ask that you support this bill as well.
For the senators that allow open wall posts (indicated by "top post" link at upper right of wall), the steps are easy:

1) like the senator
2) paste the message
3) edit the senator's name in the message
4) hit enter (or the share button) to complete the post

For the senators that do not allow open posting, a little more legwork is required. I searched the page (ctrl+f) for "budget", "debt", "deficit", "jobs", and "economy" to find a wall post by the senator that was appropriate to comment on with the message.

I also discovered that I was inadvertently spamming the newsfeed of my facebook friends. :| The solution to this is to temporarily switch your privacy settings:

1) upper right corner of facebook, click "account" -> "privacy settings"
2) select "customize settings"
3) "things I share" -> "posts by me" -> "custom"
4) "make this visible to" -> "only me" -> "save setting"

You can then revert back to your old setting after you are done sending your messages.

Fight for Poker Rights: Wednesday, June 8th:

Let's write short (no more than 250 words) letters to the editors of our local papers explaining that we demand our right to play. Even if they don't publish them, it will help show these media sources that some of their readers care about this issue.

Let's also continue working on expanding this effort via recruitment of others. Our personal recommendations of this effort will go far. The daily action plan takes very little time and there's no denying it's way +EV for the time invested.

Once done, please post here that you made the request, along with posting your personal commitment to participate in the action plan. Thanks!!

done...all except for the letter.

Can someone "draft" a letter to send to the editor. Anyone that has read my post, knows I don't have a great knack for the written word. I would like to start doing this.

Thank you

Republican:
Please consider writing an article on the US governement refusing to allow American citizens to play poker online. Poker is a game of skill, but more importantly it is an American game. While every other "free" country in the world is allowed to play this American game, the most free of them all bans it to protect us from ourselves. I find this unacceptable and believe the government should stay out of my home.

Dem:
Please consider writing an article on the US government refusing to allow American citizens to play poker online. Poker is a game of skill and by simply taxing online poker, the government could cut 20+ billion dollars into the deficit over the next 10 years. Even President Obama has or used to have a recurring poker game. It is unacceptable that we allow this billion dollar industry to be criminalized.

I threw this together based on a letter originally written by thepizzlefosho and then tweaked a bit by yours truly. Any further input is appreciated. I am going to fire this off to a few newspapers later tonight.

Quote:
On April 15th, the Department of Justice indicted three providers of online poker. Ten million Americans, including me, play this skill game as a hobby. In this time of economic trouble and government budget overruns, why is our government focused on busting up poker games? This action is wasteful, and it starts us down a dangerous path towards government interference in our daily lives.

Regulating and taxing this industry makes sense. The major players in the industry are practically begging to be regulated and taxed, yet our government has declined time and again to do so. Our government leaders should create a regulatory framework that allows responsible operators to provide Internet poker, defines rules for dealing with problem gamblers and minors, and establishes a tax structure. One recent study estimates that taxing Internet poker could generate $42 billion in tax revenue over ten years; this money could be used to fund Medicare, Social Security, and other programs that are running out of funds.

Furthermore, it is the job of the government to defend my right to life, liberty, and property. It is NOT the government’s job to protect me from myself. That is MY responsibility. Responsible adults who want to play poker, a game of skill, should be allowed to do so from the comfort of their own homes.

Please write and call your Congressmen and request that they support the regulation and taxation of Internet poker. To do so makes good sense from both a personal freedom and a tax revenue point of view.
