Hi

in the last month or maybe 2 months

every other day or so java icon appears in bottom right corner on my pc saying update is available, sometimes without clicking it the pop up comes on screen saying Java- new updates available etc

so when i click on it to update it says "you already have the latest version of java"

so why does it keep doing this?

thanks

Saw this same behavior on one of my machines. Not sure what caused it but I just completely removed Java and reinstalled the latest version from Oracle.

It is nothing to worry about. I have this from time to time and it always comes down to 1 cause...

Are you running software like Peer Block?

One of the sites that peer block restricts access to is the certificate revocation list for Oracle - this means that your computer rejects Oracles SSL certificate which in turn denies your computer the ability to actually check for updates. The Java update software, for some reason, then defaults to displaying the update balloon - requiring you to manually check.

You can probably just get rid of java entirely.

It seems to always be a security problem and you probably don't use it much, if at all these days.

+1 to that. 99% of my personal computer usage is Ubuntu and I have no Java runtimes installed. Have yet to find anything that requires it or any websites that don't function without it. I don't play Minecraft, which is probably the #1 client-side java app around.
