This is very wrong imo.

Really enjoying Freaks & Geeks. Didn't seem like something I'd be into, but I'm digging it. Got a Dazed & Confused vibe going on.

Checked out Hulu over the weekend. It's actually worth paying for these days.

It was too good for TV so they ended up cancelling it.

Question: Do they still intersperse ads, even when paid? We had it for a little while, but there were so many ads (especially a certain ad for a credit card, which would run 2x or 3x in a row) that I ragequit the service...

if they were to take the ads out I'd go back. But if I want to be forced to watch ads the on-demand section of my cable provider is plenty enough.

There's a second tier of paid service for I think 11.99 that is no commercials. They say that some shows will still have commercials at the very start only but I haven't seen any yet. Though I've just been watching South Park and my fiance watching Harlots and The Strain.

But they've got all the shows that just disappeared from Netflix like the xfiles, Buffy, angel, etc as well as stuff like South Park and Seinfeld and tons of older content like quantum leap and I love Lucy.

Just scrolling through there were a bunch of shows I was excited to have access to.

you're probably getting a Dazed & Confused vibe because half the cast went on to be quite successful.

Watched a couple episodes of the new Bill Nye. I like that it's science and I like that he has celebrities on the show.

I don't like how condescending and aggressive he sounds for pretty much most of the show. He's not gonna enlighten people that way.

Regardless I found the old recommendations scary good, e.g

Slow West - Little known drama starring Fassbender with good reviews - I was convinced Netflix would think I'd love it, wrongly since I saw it in the cinema and absolutely hated it - Netflix thought I'd rate it 2/5.

The Forty Year Old Virgin - thought I'd hate it based on the title + general perception it was a crude gross out movie - Netflix thought I'd rate it 4.5/5 so I watched & really liked it.

Netflix's old algorithm was scarily accurate. Now it's telling me I'll like Fifty Shades (previous 1 star), I really don't want to watch Fifty Shades just to confirm my suspicion the new rating system is garbage. The new system will improve with tweaks & as more people add ratings but right now its recommendations are pretty worthless.
Doesn't matter what you did, if 95% of people use 1 of 5 your ratings are meaningless. On top of that you and I might not have the same criteria for a three star show. Thus you were getting no actual benefit from rating things in that way. Plus if you gave a show three stars how should Netflix treat that when deciding to offer content. Some might treat it as ok, some good, some not good.

By the way Netflix was never telling you what it thought you would rate something. That is not how it worked. It showed the rating of what other people who had similar interests as you rated the movie. Even this is problematic for a five star system in determining compability with other users.

When YouTube switched years ago they had well over 95% using only two ratings and it is similar for Netflix. Now you can rate thumbs up / thumbs down or not at all. So basically all they did was remove the 2 and 4 from the rating system. And now you see a percentage of people who liked a show who have similar interests to you.

The Seven Five is a really good documentary about corrupt cops in NYC in the 80s/early 90s. There's supposed to be a feature film about this story coming before too long (to theaters, not Netflix) as well.

To be fair, he's explaining stuff that really shouldn't have to be taught to anyone over the age of 10. But you know, politics and ****.

Bill is past his prime when it comes to presenting a show as host unfortunately. He just comes across as crotchety instead of the fun loving science nerd he was

I think he started taking himself too seriously around the time CNN started having him on as their "science expert" during Fukushima. He's gone from goofy lovable science guy to insufferable know-it-all prick.

That's how I would describe Neil DeGrasse Tyson. That dude is insufferable nowadays.

I haven't seen his show, but in other media Bill still seems pretty cool/good-natured/not taking himself too seriously/etc..

It's not even close who is the better scientist
