I figured I am due for a Spimp’s Well post here since I am not posting as much in this thread for preparation like I did last year.
I was just doing a bit of reflection from last year’s PLO8 tournament. After being pretty much card dead all day and the few times I wasn’t card dead I wasn’t able to extract a ton of value, I actually wasn’t in a horrible spot for the start of day 2. I was very happy on my grind play minimizing the “big mistake” I wanted to avoid getting knocked out early.
In the past online to an extent I was becoming absolutely agro with hands that could get countered or scooped fairly easy (half the time if not a bit more). In particular the turn was a spot where I would raise pre, pot the flop, and pot the turn making me fairly committed if a raise occurs or the opponent would be all in with a solid draw chance against my slim turn lead. I would then get scooped more often than not. That did not happen in this tournament hence me being happy about my grind play.
After day 1 I was 113/152 with my 14,700 (starting stack was 4500) and pretty much even a slight bump to 20k stack would have been at around 85ish. On day 2 I got knocked out at around 130th after a couple of hours (that was the number the board said when I got knocked out so it may have been in the late 120s…or about 13 spots off the money.
I was reflecting a bit on my play this day when I was approaching the bubble. When I got busted the blinds were if I recall correctly 1k-2k with my stack being only 13k after a hand I sort of miss played. The hand I sort of miss played involved me check calling a bet on the turn with a marginal draw. The river card completed an AK straight plus a club flush (sick I remember the suit lol). Instead of checking oop I donked a bet repping the flush with the hopes he would fold AK or worse flush. He of course re potted letting me know he had it. That hand put me down to my 13k to which I got it in heads up with AQJ3 single suited losing to A862 when he flopped trip deuces. Heads up my hand has decent strength value actually even though he has a better preflop low draw.
Hand Equity Scoops Wins Hi Ties Hi Wins Lo Ties Lo

Ah8h6s2c 46.61% 336,100 447,946 0 440,770 16,758
If I could do it over I would probably look for a better hand then my “sigh bluff” hand. I was getting short stacked so time was becoming an issue, but not the panic make a move issue I tried to make. With reading this mental book even though I am reflecting on this I have come to grips with letting go all previous hands from last year including the big hand in the Monster Stack vs the pro John Monette. I won’t forget these hands, but it is bad to dwell on past results.
I have been getting a little bit of PLO8 practice in to try to continue to improve and plug any last minute leaks I may spot. I am noticing a different viewpoint on my play in terms of the mental game which is what Jared’s book was on. If someone countered a river card for a scoop, so be it, nice hand. On to the next one. I believe I will be better prepared mentally this year so IF I am fortunate enough to get in a similar situation, I will play better. I have made sure I am in decent (not great but decent lol) physical shape and now that I have a year under my belt I know exactly what to expect from the grind/mental perspective. This is why my #1 early focus has been mental related. If I am better mentally prepared I hopefully will make good decisions at the table for the most part the entire day (ideally at least).
The structure is a bit different this year for this first tournament. You have a higher starting stack of 7,500 chips, but the blinds in the early going are a bit higher before leveling out close to the end of the day from last year's blind levels. The blinds are still an hour long so there won’t be an early rush requirement. I will be curious if people are a bit more aggressive to start this year with the bigger stack size or not.
Anyway, this post was just to show a little bit of my progress, and a bit of info on last year’s tournament for new investors. Feel free to post any questions if anything comes up!
