Solid night but would've been a great night had my set held against a naked flush draw on the turn. Other than that nothing major and got money in good spots.

So i'm a dumbass. I reattached my CD burner and I accidentally left the power cable for the fan ajar. My fan was going off and on all day and my computer was lagging because the CPU was overheating. I was trying to watch MMA and play poker but the lag was too bad for me to concentrate. It was like playing on a 56k modem.

Played some 200NL tonight as I got some good tables. Ran fairly well and then donks started hitting IE. AA<<J7dd on Axx ddd flop. Ran into some coolers, ran into AA twice. So it was a pretty roller coaster session.

Damn, I need to stay away from 200NL, lots of aggro regs or nits. Need to study my game more to make the jump to 200NL.
03-18-2015 , 01:58 AM
Yeah, 200nl was a lot tougher

So I haven't played/updated in a while, just really been tired after work not feeling motivated to table hunt and grind. Some personal updates, I've decided to leave accounting as I'm going to be pursuing a teaching career, teaching mathematics at either at a high school or junior high level. I used to be a math tutor in college and enjoyed the interaction with students. However, this will be different as tutoring is a lot different than teaching a classroom. The credential program will take a year with 3 months of student teaching/interning.

I go back and forth whether or not to leave my current job as I don't really enjoy it very much. I have a lot of money saved up and have more than enough to not work and pay for school to obtain my masters and teaching credential. However, I live with my parents but I pay rent to them, and they won't be very happy and will most likely kick me out/never talk to me again if I do decide to do this. My plan is to play poker both live and online over the next year plus, until I finish the school's credential program. After completing the credential program, which can be completed online and there is very little requirement to be at a physical campus, I will begin to student teach/intern and then hopefully it won't be too long that I can obtain a permanent teaching position.

While on this poker pro lifestyle, I would probably use this opportunity to drive around the country a little bit and experience things I haven't experienced before, much like a lot of live pros are doing. It would be the adventure I never got to have when I first left college, because I didn't have a job offer when I graduated and I was broke. The logical side of me says I should stay, don't rock the boat, you're 30, man up and stay at your job, lots of people do what they don't like to make a living. But a little voice in me says, why do what you don't enjoy, when you're unhappy, this is your last shot. I'm not really sure why I'm writing this, just writing down what I'm thinking about since 2+2 is full of all kinds of poker players from all walks of life all around the world.

Thanks for reading.

As long as you have the funds to put food on the table then you should do what makes you happy.

If that means doing exactly what your parents approve of, or what your peers approve of, that is fine. If it means going to live in the rainforest with an uncivilized tribe then do that!

Thanks bm 303. I'm still debating it. I read a few of the live/online pros' PG&C and blogs and for the most part there are happier but they definitely don't see it for super long term, which is why I think this is perfect, because I only plan to do it for only a little over a year. Family is very important to me and disappointing my mom is a big con, though I'm pretty sure she's already disappointed in me already, but at least she's happier that I have a job and not being a bum. Though, I think she just wants me to be happy, and my current job really stresses/pisses me off on a daily basis. Plus getting up early every day sucks, having a boss sucks, commuting sucks, etc. I'm confident I have the discipline to make it work, but again there's a huge doubt as well.

Anwyays, crazy thing happened today. My computer literally caught fire. I was using the computer like normal then suddenly I see an orange flash from my tower. Within a few seconds, I started smelling and seeing smoke from the tower, and my computer shut down. The cable literally caught fire as you can see the damage below.

Luckily, it didn't damage anything else. Had to replace the cable and power supply, but I dodged a bullet because it could've been worse and caused damage to my other components.

I've been a pro since 2008, quit for about a year after black friday, then got back to it. I've thought about a lot of different ways to say this, dunno what's best.

1) You'll make less playing poker than working.
2) It sounds way better than it actually is
3) Live poker? I thought you didn't enjoy that. I think it works better with your dream, which is why you're including it.

I could go on and on, but honestly you shouldn't quit. I know how you feel right now, and why you feel like that. Perhaps you could settle on a middle ground. Quit your job in 3-6 months. Know that you're quitting, it'll give you a sense of invulnerability which will make it far more bearable. Then, instead of quitting to play live poker, just travel for a few weeks or a month. Go to a site like meetup.com and join in some groups activity in a few different states, set up a route/plan, and just adventure with randoms for a few weeks or a month. After that, get a place of your own assuming the parents don't want you there anymore, and start grinding.

That's how I'd do it in your shoes. Though having also been the guy to quit his job to play poker for a living twice in his life, old me would just go along with your plan.
06-12-2015 , 10:58 AM
Live poker for me is enjoyable in small doses. Like I said, I'm just thinking about doing it. A steady paycheck just for basically showing up is pretty hard to give up, even though I don't make very much.
06-12-2015 , 11:03 AM
I know what you're feeling, man. I already had my teaching degree and was working at an insurance company, hating my life, because I couldn't find a teaching job on the East coast.

Fast forward two years later, I will be starting my 3rd year of teaching and I'm doing what matters to me. I don't make as much money, but I have job satisfaction and free time to play as much or little poker as I want.

Do what matters to you, not someone else. If your parents can't support you in your quest to be happy, then that's on them. I'd go for it; it sounds like you dislike your job AND you have enough cash saved up. I quit my job with no cash saved up, and believe me, I'd do it again.

Good luck. I'm sure you'll make the right move.
