Not sure if this has been done before. Is it possible to have zero equity (no ties) in a 9 handed hold em game?

Re: Send questions/comments for the show!

Hi,

I've been a long time listener of this show, since the old Rounders day, I have a question, I heard Adam has been doing the weight loss challenge, I like to get some advice from Adam and Terrence

I'm planning to go to Vegas in about six weeks, and what I want to do is to lose about 15-20lbs before I go on this trip, I'm at 180lb right now, I work about 10-12hr/day, have a young boy to take care of after a long day of work, I dont eat very healthy or unhealthy but I do drink beer regularly, I get about 7 hours of sleep a day, my plan is if I put myself on a 40 day program would it be possible to lose that weight? How would I be able to do this?

If you guys can give me some advice that would be great

thx

Just catching up on the show right now and have to say, congrats Adam, that is some impressive determination, bro It reminds me a lot of meditation retreats and how you have to sit there without moving for hours on end while your body naturally wants to rip itself apart

Anyhow, great shows guys, keep it up

You can always do exercises that don't take much time. When I decided it was time to get back in shape. I went from 140 pounds when I ran a marathon to 180 pounds years later. I can't always run because there is a lot of ice on the ground in the winter and I don't want to pay for a gym membership.

I decided to do some of the exercises that we did in the army, starting with a few and building up. It's easy to drop and do a few push-ups several times a day. Decide how many you want to do every day, then bump that number up once a week. Jumping jacks, the same deal. Make it a game and have your son work out with you. Print out a certificate when he reaches a target number.

I did that with my sons and my youngest won the 18 and under division of a 5K when he was 9. A lot of the high school runners were at a big meet somewhere out of town, but still it's quite an accomplishment.

The best exercises to lose weight are fork putdowns and plate pushaways.

That seems to vary a lot for different people.

Rush Limbaugh cut a lot of weight by hiring a combination chef/nutritionist. He still said that he didn't want to walk farther than his mailbox, but he lost a lot of weight and he hit all the right numbers on a doctor visit.

I was the opposite of Rush. I hate dieting, and when I eat even a little less I can't stop thinking about when I can eat again.

At one point early in our marriage my wife was upset because when we weighed ourselves I was 139 pounds, she was 140 and she didn't want to weigh more than her husband. We would often walk to the ice cream stand on our block, where she would get a small ice cream cone and I would get a large banana split. When we had supper I would (and still do) usually eat 50% more meat than she and I drink a lot more milk. I was so active that I never put on any weight, I always felt great and had a lot of energy.

Whenever I went to the doctor, all of my numbers were great, blood pressure something like 112/72, resting pulse of 64, weight always within a pound or two of 140. I just let myself get too busy with too many sedentary activities, in fact, most days last year I didn't leave the house because I only played poker online.

I'm working hard on getting back in shape, but it doesn't feel like work because I like working out and running. I'll probably drop 30 pounds this year because I want to get back in shape, I want to run my second marathon in a couple years, and that's fun for me.

As long as you are checking in with your doctor, I don't think there is just one way to lose weight. My wife lost 20 pounds in 2017 by cutting way back on sweets like cookies and pie. If she doesn't eat it, she knows I will. If I don't pound in the calories I get pretty grumpy.

Losing weight (specifically shedding fat and ideally not catabolising muscle) is a product of burning more calories than you consume. This is true for everyone. It's how you achieve that goal (intermittent fasting, keto, paleo, Weight Watchers, IIFYM, simply cutting out soda, running marathons and eating anything you like, the 20:4 diet, whatever) that is variable from person to person.

It seems like semantics and I'm not trying to be condescending with that explanation, but there are plenty of people that don't understand this.

It's important to note that I'm not talking about being in shape or getting fit, simply about losing weight (mostly fat). One can of course be plenty slim and very unhealthy just as one can be a little chubby and in great health.

Re: Send questions/comments for the show!

Hey Adam and Terence,

just heard the newest pokercast episode, thx for the reply, just wanted to give u more info about me, I'm 5"4, used to work out alot 5 years ago before I had a kid, was around 150lbs but now i'm at 180lbs, do long hours of working at a production facility, so its really hard for me to not each starches like bread and rice, (I feel like it gives me more energy during the day), anyways, I havent gone to the gym for over 18 months, used to run, lift weights, I have until Feb 22 to lose what I can, in the long term I want to be more healthy and active, I'm just hoping if I cut alcohol (beer mostly) then I can lose a little bit of weight, (craft beer is my friend and enemy) What kind of diet should i do? what exercise should I do?

thanks

Re: Send questions/comments for the show!

Hi Guys, great show keep up the good work.

I have a question for Adam, with 1 weight in left would you have taken a double or nothing offer from Bill Perkins when all you would have to do is hit the weight target for an additional 8 weeks.

I need to shift some weight, when Adam started his challenge I was about 244lb I am now 243lb, I think I need to speed up my efforts.
Can you please offer me some pokercast Karma for every week that I lose weight, it would go a long way in helping me in my efforts. (Ross, a sound effect for this would be nice)
Terrence, belated congrats on the new arrival.

Re: Send questions/comments for the show!

Hello casters,

Any chance we could talk about indirect value in MTT´s please?

An example (we assume it to be a breakeven spot)

FT of B55 9handed.
Hero and villain are the shortest stack with 18bb.
Villian open shoves on BTN and hero have AQo in BB.

How much to weigh in indirect factors vs direct/ICM?

Folding is worth X, while calling is worth Y (greater negative ICMwise) but is worth Z in indirect benefits of having a larger stack.

Few topics to get one thinking:

-Losing 3b/re-steal stack
-Blinds going up more significant with small stack
-Showing peers willingness to flip/gambol
-Negative compounding effect of all (Blinds, ante, fewer spots)

Or any else...

Thx beforehand!

+1

Please give Alan the 2+2 forum love, as his knowledge of the NCAA has been huge and his picks have been golden. Really love hearing his opinions on various coaches. Interested on his thoughts on a tanking OU team getting in vs more deserving teams -- sure we'll hear all about that, as he always shares his thoughts on selection travesties. He's a reliable great guest, and I always look forward to his arrival on the show. Hopefully he doesn't feel too much pressure on the pick, as we're all gambles and know that he's both played well and run well over the years of the 2+2 lock. We're all big kids and can take it.

Re: Send questions/comments for the show!

Hey fellas,
I have a question about a certain type of home game I have been playing in recently. The game is a home tournament with a buy-in of $20usd and depending on re-buys that day there is usually 8-11 total buy-in's in the pot. The game is full of drunk maniacs and complete rookies. I have been having a hard time creating a strategy and wanted your opinions. What do you recommend doing when in this type of game. Every raise gets called or folded all around. I bleed chips when I play tight and I get river'ed when I make a move.
Any advice would be great. Thanks for your time and thanks again for all the great podcasts!!!

You said that you started playing that game "recently." It could be that your sample size it too small to tell you how the game really plays.

Starting 1/1/2017 I took $40 that had been sitting on Juicy Stakes Poker for two years and I decided to grind it up. After a year of playing mostly $1 tournaments (good bankroll management) I got it up to just over $400. As of today it's $503.48.

Tournament variance being what it is, even though I did pretty well in 2017 there were big bumps in the road along the way:

May -$10.20
June -$12.60
September -$9.17
December -$30.92

You have probably played fewer home tournaments than the number I played in my December 2017 train wreck. There are a lot of ups and downs in tournaments poker. Big ones.

Before you think about changing your strategy, you need to think about what really happened over a few tournaments. You said that you got rivered when you made a move. If that happened a hundred times in a row, the game is probably rigged. If it happened five times a row, the mathematical term is negative variance and it happens to everyone.

Maybe best month was January, +$35.70. My worst was December, -$30.92. That's what statistical variance, both positive and negative, looks like for tournament players.. Sometimes there is nothing that you can do but jump on that variance train and ride it out.

Terrance,

Here's an MMA dude who doesn't agree with your eating style. Would be interested in your reaction to this (after the 30 second commercial):

Are you actually interested in my reaction, or did you just find another video that confirms your vegan beliefs and want an excuse to post it?

So what if there's some "MMA dudes" who go vegan and love it? Who cares? What does that prove? There are also dudes who literally eat nothing but meat (no vegetables, no nuts, no seeds, no grains, literally 100% meat) and feel like they perform well. Does that mean I think an all-meat diet is great for everyone? Nope!

I have zero, zilch, zip interest in vegan/paleo/carnivore/whatever polemic. It's just as bad as politics these days. There are people out there who want to have reasonable discussions about fine-tuning performance and health, and there are religious zealots who just hang out in their echo chambers all day.

@ TChan. To pay some compliments (and to lighten up the tone a little), I am impressed by your choice to live a more simple lifestyle (with animals and all) on the island, impressed by the fact that you have monies, yet choose simplicity (if I am not mistaken, that is...). This is coming from someone that has lived up in northern Yukon for precisely the same reason (despite earning a top 2% salary in Canada).

Anyhow, great shows, as always, and hope you will receive this compliment of mine favourably bro
