Thanks again for the great podcasts. It really keeps me going during this ****ty post hurricane commute.
As TChan's only fan (I was the only person other than himself to vote for him as favorite host in the SHEEP Game) I've been meaning to write in to congratulate him on having the baby and ask a few questions.
Questions: (probably should pause for answers)
1. Given his "Life is Poker" attitude and desire to maximize life EV - how does having a baby fit into that? Any opinions on an optimal baby strategy to maximize life EV? My best guess is to adopt a 4-5 year old. You remove any chance of complications and the annoying new born and toddler years while they pretty much only remember you as being the parent. Also, doing a benefit to society.
2. Given his new found hobby of homesteading, how the **** does he plan to make time to learn how to raise goats when he has a new born? Most new parents barely have time for a shower (which considering you'll be surrounded by goats you might not notice the smell, so you can skip them), let alone have time to learn a lifetime's worth of outdoor skills. I feel like the great saying: "Everyone has a plan until they get hit in the face" applies to this crazy plan of his. Except you could change the quote to "Everyone has a plan until the get hit in the face...with a baby". Example, my wife (former guam stripper from degen story way back) had great plans before the baby was born to have like 3 more. Within 1.5 days of his birth (still in the hospital), any plan to have more kids vanished. Someone set a line on how long until TChan returns to civilization and lets get some bets on it in the forum.
Other topics
1. Totally on Adam's side with knowing the gender ahead of time and the "science" argument of having baby's in hospitals. TChan think of the sample size - normally only super healthy, low risk, and most likely rich women have babies in a birthing center or at home. Therefore the samples and statistics aren't really comparable. Not saying a hospital is a great experience (our delivery nurse was a raging ***** who seemed pissed that we were there - not like I wanted to show up on new years eve either.)
2. There has to be a side bet going on the gender of the baby between adam and ross - its a pure flip
3. Can we have a Name TChan's baby "Madness Bracket" (similar to the best band, food, movie from pokercast years gone by). Obviously TChan is not obligated to name his baby whatever name wins, but I feel like some creative names might emerge.
Thanks again,
My wife and I did something very similar to this, but we really weren't prepared either. We were interested in adopting two children and we were told that we would be on a waiting list for six months. We got a call about three boys (biological brothers) and there were living with us a couple weeks later.
The boys were 6, 8 and 9 so they didn't need constant care the way a baby does. I got a different job so either my wife or myself would always be home. That said, we did have some issues that most families don't have to deal with.
After their first day of school our youngest* followed another kid home from school. They were in an all-black neighborhood and a woman noticed that there was a white boy in her neighborhood wandering around looking confused. She called the police and they brought him home before we knew he was missing.
The police officer was angry. His passenger didn't know his address (it was 1880 and he only knew that "there were eights in it.)" The cop thought he had a runaway that was jerking him around, because someone six years old would certainly know his address.
Lesson learned. We made sure they memorized their address and phone number.

*He really wasn't ours yet, the adoption wasn't official for a year.
