Episode #498 - June 27th, 2018

On this episode of the Pokercast - Phil Hellmuth sold a WSOP package on a staking site, but was the price right? Also, a couple make it down to the final 3 in a $5k tournament at the Venetian and a ton of ethics questions arise. To begin, Terrence is down in Vegas and gives us a live update of his WSOP then we get into the news:
Our top stories this week have sparked a lot of debate recently. Phil Hellmuth sold shares to a WSOP Turbo event at 1.8/1 and people were very upset, but was the outrage justified? Plus Alex Foxen and Kristen Bicknell, who are a couple, get three handed in the MSPT $5k event at the Venetian with a lot of money on the line at a televised final table. Some soft play and collusion was alleged from the poker world and we break down the hand in question. We’ve also got some WSOP updates and notable bracelet winners from the last couple weeks of action. In 140 or less there are some amazing WSOP and World Cup tweets. In the Mailbag questions include what to do with your bankroll when it’s not in action, a defender of LA cash game etiquette and we end with a hand Adam played.

I did not get Terrence's logic when it comes to judging what is ethical. He said how can it be unethical when Phil truly believes he is worth the offered price.
So if a slave master truly believes that slavery is a good thing than it isn't unethical? I know, a bit of an extreme example but it makes clear that ethical bahvior should not be based on the subjects personal beliefs...

Terrence's intuition on the Poker Players Championship was pretty good. I ran 500,000 trials of a sim with 100-player fields with each equally skilled player entering every year for 13 years. About 26% of the time there was at least one three-time winner after 13 tourneys. I think T guessed 30%.

That seemed high to me, but still an incredible accomplishment.

I am so on Terrence's side on the Hellmuth staking discussion. So what if a $20 stake is only worth $12 or even $6. It gives the person a rooting interest, and a chance at a nice little score. His analogy of the football team at -110 is perfect.

I do believe Phil knows he is not worth that much; if he was he would be able to sell it in one chunk to a regular backer. These staking sites are for exactly the opposite reason. For pros who have a name to sell, this is what they have earned; free EV.

Regarding Scotty Nguyen, someone posted this from the Rio back hallways somewhere:

TC mentioned that Razz might be the easiest game to teach a beginner. Remko had a similar discussion recently on Twitter:

And TC said that Adam's Aunt's name is Mavis?

Adam, on your PLO hand, you said you had KK54 double suited. Then you said on the K turn you picked up a backdoor flush draw. Pretty confident one of those statements is false.

This also means I'm already done with the episode!

Yup, I noticed that, too.

I was listening to an old episode of Thinking Poker Podcast and Christian Soto was describing a hand and he said the flop was KKK rainbow and they both started giggling about how it was redundant to say rainbow.

I just assumed this happened in a Rio cash game.
