Pokercast Episode 80 - Massive WSOP Main Event Coverage!

Live from the Two Plus Two Studios, July 14th 2009 - The World Series of Poker Main Event coverage continues this week on the Pokercast with extensive discussion of stories from the floor and behind the scenes thanks to our special guest Brad Willis, lead blogger for PokerStars who shares some interesting side notes from the Main Event including the surreal atmosphere taking place at the Rio with fewer than 100 players remaining all gunning to be part of this years November Nine. Aaron Jones provides some insightful tips involving stack off ranges in this weeks Leggo Poker strategy segment. Two Plus Two's own Mat Sklansky joins us in a pre-recorded segment from the Two Plus Two WSOP gathering to share a tale of Las Vegas debauchery in this weeks "Storytime With". Mike and Adam also talk some forum static and of course gives away the password for the July 19th Poker Stars VIP Club Invitational for Pokercast listeners.

Looks like Leo Margets is the only female left going into day 7.

You could say she has penetrated the female market.

OICWUDT!

Though I would have thought "penetrating the female market" would apply more to having Isabelle on the podcast last week

How is the aces question any different from the facebook question we had before? You CANT fold them....and how does exposing them make any sense? This is the hand you wait for, you cripple it by practically announcing it, and then you win the minimum? I disagree with this line completely...You're in it to win it, not min cash (unless your name is Kessler).

I don't fold or expose my hand in that spot either, but there is certainly an argument for it in some scenarios.

While obviously you are in it to win it, increasing your chip stack to 40K from 20K when there are 900,000,000 chips in play and there are still 650 people left in the event and the double-up only increases your chances of winning the event from .02% to .05% it changes things for some people. The increased equity of having 40K vs 20K is termendously minimal in the big picture of a 10 day tournament. If you are guaranteed $21K if you don't get sucked out on and guaranteed $0 if you do get sucked out on is further pause for thought. If you got in on a $500 mega-satellite and your primary goal at the outset of the event was to cash and you would be mentally crushed if you played for 3.5 days, got so close and failed adds yet another wrinkle to the dilemma.

Re: Pokercast Episode 80 - Massive WSOP Main Event Coverage!

A Short Interview with Darvin Moon

Question: How did you get to the WSOP?
Moon: I won my seat at the casino in Wheeling (WV). We started going out there last year. I came in ninth one time last year. This time, I played three times (trying to qualify for a seat to play in the Main Event). I finished third the first time, and then busted out the next time. The third time, I won my seat.

Question: How long have you been playing poker?
Moon: About three years. I watch poker on TV a lot. And I pay attention to it.

Question: What is your usual poker game?
Moon: there are about 70 of us around who play around. We do benefits at places like the Elks Club, American Legion, and the fire departments. I also play in Wheeling (WV).

Question: You really came out of nowhere to seize the chip lead. How did you do it?
Moon: Itís easy to play when you get hands like I was getting. Itís just unbelievable. Itís like a dream. I got pocket aces and flopped trips, and someone was betting into me. But I had pocket kings one time and the other guy pushed all in over the top of me. I just mucked my hand pre-flop. I mean, he has to have aces. What else can he have? Thatís just my style. I play tight. When I get them I bet and when I donít, I fold.

Question: You must feel like a kid in a candy store here at the WSOP.
Moon: Oh yeah. Iím nervous. I mean, this is my first time in Las Vegas. It was my first time on a big plane.

Question: How did it feel to play on the main ESPN stage under the spotlight of television cameras?
Moon: It didnít bother me at all. I mean, I am nervous. But I am more nervous out there than I am here. I focus on the cards and I am comfortable playing. I walk down that hall and everybody thatís won and everybody is big time and a name. And they walk right by you and you say, Ďwow, here I am playing with these guys. Itís a dream come true.

Question: Why are you wearing a New Orleans Saints (NFL) cap?
Moon: I like cheering for the underdog. They were underdogs for a long time. But now they are doing good and I am sticking with them. We are located right between Pittsburgh and Baltimore. It is mostly Steeler fans where I live. And I wear this hat to mess with them.

Question: Letís say you get offered ninth place right now. You can make a deal and you will get $1 million for ninth, plus you get to be part of the November Nine. Would you take the imaginary deal?
Moon: No. No. Ninth place? I got my goals set. Itís not first. But itís not ninth, either. Iíll be happy. I donít care if I go out the first hand tomorrow. Iíve had fun. Itís been worth every minute of it. I just like to play and itís unreal. Itís something I canít even dream of doing, and here I am.

Re: Pokercast Episode 80 - Massive WSOP Main Event Coverage!

Solid Episode. I really enjoyed the updates on the on-goings at the ME since I wasn't following the updates on the WSOP website as much as I could have.
Gotta relisten to the story time segment after drinking some shots though but I gotta admit that it was pretty funny to listen to while being sober as well.

To me one of the highlights of the show was hearing about Joe Hachem whining about the aggro-style of play at the ME. That seriously made my day.

Sidenote: I posted this in the PCL suggestions thread as well (but I am not sure how closely M&A are following that thread aorn) but how about mentioning the Pokercast League a little bit earlier in the shows?
Turnout at today's event was only 28 players and I feel like participation might be a little higher if the league gets mentioned around the beginning of the show. (to counter the short attention span some of the listeners might have)
I also realize though that at the moment ME coverage definatly had to be the top priority in the show. (don't want my comment to be seen as critizism rather as a suggestion for the future)
Just a thought. (I'm certainly no expert on those things.)

You Canadians are too polite. The storytime segment was much tamer than I expected based on the build-up. The language was pretty standard stuff, as was the story itself.

Don't get me wrong, certainly a good tale, but not offensive.

Anybody who WOULD have been offended by that stopped listening long ago.
