Pokercast Episode 48 - Bobby Hoff & David Sklansky

Live from the Two Plus Two Studios - The feature guest this week on Pokercast is Bobby "The Wizard" Hoff. Bobby discusses several topics including the big cash games at the Commerce, playing with Stu Ungar and shares some high stakes no-limit strategy. David Sklansky also chimes in on the program to talk about some interesting player style concepts and sheds some light on his unusually short posts on the forums. Mike and Adam also talk some tournament news, forum static and of course give away the password for the November 23rd Poker Stars VIP Club freeroll.

One of my favorite things is to guess why the show has earned an explicit tag on itunes the weeks that it has.

I am quite lonely.

Also, has bunner permanently replaced the gun?

Bobby Hoff great show. I found what he said about stu a little strange. It was good to hear the other side of stu.
Great show for us old timers.

Why did you find it a little strange about Stu? Although Stu is before my time as a player I knew of his experience growing up in the LES in NYC and through other well respected players who aren't caught up in the post 2003 poker press machine, Bobby's observations were generally correct from what I know about him.

Re: Pokercast Episode 48 - Bobby Hoff & David Sklansky

i realize the interview was getting a bit off-topic, but i wish you would have probed sklansky a bit more on his opinions on phil laak playing a live tournament in disguise and how that compares to playing on someone else's account online.

he says that he believes the phil laak stunt to be 100% ethical which i find very interesting, perhaps even a bit shocking (although hard to be shocked when it's david talking), and something you don't hear people say very often. or if they say it, they certainly don't back it up with a reasonable argument.

to me it's very similar, if not identical, to situations that come up in online poker all the time when a known player plays on another player's account. david also makes the comparison in the interview.

the typical attitude in the online community seems to be:

"if i am a known player playing on a different account from the one i'm known for, and i have reads on the other known players at the table, that is unethical because they don't have the reads on me that they'd normally have if they knew who i really was."

seems like a reasonable position to take in a perfect world but may not be very realistic given the nature of online poker. it's probably asking a bit too much from a player pool that is comprised partially of degenerates, addicts, cheaters, and those motivated mainly by greed, to adhere to strict ethical guidelines - especially when there is no real punishment other than scorn and ostracism from the community.

my guess is that his argument has something to do with the fact that you can never know for sure who you're playing against online so you should never believe with certainty that things are actually what they appear to be. in other words, it's just a risk that is associated with playing online and one should expect such things to happen a certain % of the time.

i remember vaguely his "sklansky minute" piece many episodes back regarding "unenforceable rules" in online poker and i suppose that would be a tie in to this to some degree as well.

Quite a harsh stance considering there are tons of poker players that are quite ethical and upstanding citizens in the community but what makes the headline are the degens that end up on drugs and such; that's true in the celebrity world as well when you focus more on Britney Spears than on someone worthwhile. You also may be confused as the focus ON THE FELT is to use the art of deception to gain an advantage against your opponent and I doubt anyone thinks twice, but regarding matters OFF THE FELT I'm sure they feel quite the opposite as many poker players are men/women of their word and stay true. Take Phil Ivey and his wish to pay off a bet he made with Chip Reese while he was alive but couldn't because the man passed away before the bet took place, think about the honor in that.

Hey! Mike quoted my lame "Jay-Z" thing from the Phil Ivey thread. Yes!!! I want to go out on a high note. I am officially retired from two plus two posting. I may one day have another account (with a different notorious Canuck disappointment as the screen name), but The Tank is retired!

I don't know about shocking... its hard to really say what you can take from that interview on the subject.

When the topic was initially brought up it was pretty clear he hadn't seen a picture or heard much, if anything, of Phil Laak's disguise and so when he was saying he thought it ethical he could have had a mental picture of Phil Laak in a big frizzy wig, oversized glasses and a rubber nose... where it would be quite obvious it was Phil Laak, but "in disguise"

It wasn't until the end of the interview, after all his observations were made, that he was fully clued in to the nature and extent of the disguise.

200 seems like a big number for Bunner to guess. Phillips may be a charming older dude, but 100 seems like a high number for him. Montgomery and Suharto must be at 5 combined as a max. Guys who have girlfriends like Demidoff, would hold his number steady for a while.

Yea, LOL at 200. I think there's a significant chance that every player at that final table is in the single digits.

great show guys, thanks as always!

regarding hoff's comment about the private hollywood games, he mentioned that he never played in a "country club game". just wondering if you guys considered a follow up question regarding this comment. i got the sense that he might have had something else to say about that subject, just not sure what...
