Have tickets to see them on October 29th. Haven't heard the whole record yet as it just dropped this week officially but it seems like a nice comeback. Octopus is a grower (any tune that features that crazy Asian drummer is good with me). Day Four is a very solid track. So far no home run classics like Banquet or Helicopter but there's a lot of exciting guitar on this effort and some heavy guitar that we've never heard before(that tune 'Kettling' could start a riot).

While they seem to have returned to the urgency of Silent Alarm and A Weekend In the City, it's still different than their original so-called post-punk sound. It's completely different altogether than the electronic experiment that was Intimacy.

I'm starting to lump them in more with the likes of Biffy Clyro, Muse, Pumpkins etc.. as opposed Joy Division and Gang of Four.

I'm a fan for sure.

Labor day is May 1st in almost all of the world. However, since it was a celebration of the worker in general it was "picked up" more by the communists. Can't be having a communist holiday in america, can we? Hence the Labor Day in September.

Edit: But yeah, it's pretty much a worldwide holiday!

International workers' day is a result of the fact that the Second International, which was formed 100 years after the French Revolution, wanted to bring about a maximum of 8 hours of labor a day. They decided that the best way to achieve this was to demonstrate every year on May 1st.

Labor Day is a day that the American government installed to celebrate their workers, but hasn't really got any historical background (I think).

For some reason every time Adam and Mike say "Matt Marafioti" I hear "Mad Marafioti". Is this intentional, the accent or a Freudian slip?

Remember May 1st next year, guys. Take the day off, but mark it on your calendars.

Unless you're in Japan, where you can celebrate Labor Thanksgiving Day on November 23rd.

Your location credit is not without due, however: there is a good argument that Labor Day in the US was inspired by the labor celebrations in Canada when it comes to choosing a date for the US.

Just finished the whole episode:

Saw the retweet by Adam and thought "no, that has to be a joke"....wish I'd have saved the pic for photoshopage.

The link to the Ziigmund photoshop thread is in my original post with perhaps the best shop of the bunch...

Anyone else bothered by the float the turn ad that says using hold Em manager INCREASES your learning curve. Don't you want to lower your learning curve so you learn faster?

tl/dr

The familiar expression "steep learning curve" may refer to either of two aspects of a pattern in which the marginal rate of required resource investment is initially low, perhaps even decreasing at the very first stages, but eventually increases without bound.

Early uses of the metaphor focused on the pattern's positive aspect, namely the potential for quick progress in learning (as measured by, e.g., memory accuracy or the number of trials required to obtain a desired result) at the introductory or elementary stage. Over time, however, the metaphor has become more commonly used to focus on the pattern's negative aspect, namely the difficulty of learning once one gets beyond the basics of a subject.

In the former case, the "steep[ness]" metaphor is inspired by the initially high rate of increase featured by the function characterizing the overall amount learned versus total resources invested (or versus time when resource investment per unit time is held constant)—in mathematical terms, the initially high positive absolute value of the first derivative of that function. In the latter case, the metaphor is inspired by the pattern's eventual behavior, i.e., its behavior at high values of overall resources invested (or of overall time invested when resource investment per unit time is held constant), namely the high rate of increase in the resource investment required if the next item is to be learned—in other words, the eventually always-high, always-positive absolute value and the eventually never-decreasing status of the first derivative of that function. In turn, those properties of the latter function dictate that the function measuring the rate of learning per resource unit invested (or per unit time when resource investment per unit time is held constant) has a horizontal asymptote at zero, and thus that the overall amount learned, while never "plateauing" or decreasing, increases more and more slowly as more and more resources are invested.

This difference in emphasis has led to confusion and disagreements even among learned people.
