PokerCast Episode 203 - Year in Review Special

Live from the Two Plus Two Studios, December 27th 2011 - Year in Review Special This week on the Two Plus Two PokerCast Mike and Adam provide a 2011 Year in Review Special reliving their favorite and not so favorite moments of the past year. They recap the events of Black Friday and the continuing struggle to bring regulated online poker to the United States. All the big stories of 2011 are touched on including the unveiling of Viktor “Isildur1” Blom, the rise of the Aria poker room, Ben Lamb crushing the WSOP, ESPN's ground breaking coverage of the Main Event and many others. Deuces Cracked coach "jjyykk" talks about "Reviewing Hand Histories" in this week's Leggo Poker / Deuces Cracked strategy segment. In forum static Mike and Adam share their picks for favorite Two Plus Two thread & best poker hand of the year, and of course give away the password for the January 1st Poker Stars VIP Club Invitational for PokerCast listeners.

Do they discuss the recent DOJ announcement on this show, or was it recorded prior to that?

Woo, just listening to the show - been waiting for the next episode to arrive.

Regarding Party and Anurag Dikshit discussion at the beginning of the show, remember that Party Gaming offered more than just poker - also casino games, bingo, and sports betting. Pre-UIGEA, I believe these were all available to US residents as well. (Someone in the States who was paying attention at the time, please feel free to confirm or deny.) If so, I don't think the recent DOJ announcement really changed a whole lot for Party and the penalty they paid.

Good point. I'd just hate to think the guy lit a match to $300milly for nothing at all. He already has to live with the name Dikshit. He deserves millions for that alone.

I'd change my name to Dikshit for a mere... oh, I dunno... 20 million? Granted, it's a bit late for me to go through middle school with that name.

I might be wrong, but I don't think Party offered anything but poker at that time.

Wikipedia notes "PartyGaming Plc was founded in 1997 with the launch of Starluck Casino." This jogged a few memories - I don't believe they called it "Party Casino" at first, but they had links and cross-promotions to the Starluck Casino site. Archive.org shows there were partycasino.com web pages that linked to both Party Poker and Starluck Casino from 2005 or so. I don't remember exactly when they integrated the casino in with the Party client more closely and started calling it Party Casino, but it looks like it was mostly a naming/branding change.

Actually, that page on archive.org notes at the top, "PartyCasino - a brand new casino experience coming early 2006." Sounds about right.

I believe the sports betting portal was PartyBets.com and it started up around late 2006, again judging by archive.org. That also jives with my (admittedly untrustworthy) memories.

Addendum: since UIGEA was passed around Sep 30, 2006 (Wikipedia again), it looks like Party may not have offered sports betting before that point, but they did offer poker and casino gambling. So maybe if they did not offer the sport betting feature to US residents, they could claim they were not breaking the Wire Act and UIGEA under the new interpretation. Edit: again, checking an early partybets.com web page on archive.org, it looks like they blocked US residents from the start. "We do not accept wagers from players in the USA or those with a US billing address."

to clarify further as I had a braincamp last night, 'too late, axe in car' is not from Breaking Bad, it is a 2+2 meme taken from the chatlog of an angry player.
