Re: PokerCast Episode 186 - Tony Dunst, Dan Gati & WCOOP Preview

- the 'money was never there' point is key
- funny that the people making those phantom deposits have next-to-nada in their accounts.
- there's a finance saying (from buffett?) that it's only when the tide goes out that you see who's swimming naked. Full Tilt's strategy seems to have been similar - that they could credit the accounts, and let the rake claw it back over time, knowing that there was only going to be a problem if suddenly everybody wanted to withdraw at the same time. In the light of hindsight, this was obviously pretty dubious a strategy in an industry of grey legality.

Re: PokerCast Episode 186 - Tony Dunst, Dan Gati & WCOOP Preview

I'm confused. Surely there would be more chips at the final table if somebody abandons their stack to buyin the next day... Because if they didn't abandon it there would only be that one entry worth of chips...

I guess you're saying that it's less than if they were to play all or nothing and lose that whole first stack before buying in again the next day.. which is true, but if they do that there is a chance they win, in which case they won't be rebuying.

Imo it evens out. Personally though if i'm in the tourney I think I want people to rebuy on day 1b...

Re: PokerCast Episode 186 - Tony Dunst, Dan Gati & WCOOP Preview

i was semi convinced by the argument about percentages. Really the percentages are a bit of a fiction of presentation whatever you do.

When calculating percentages, you calculate by working out outs divided by total outstanding cards, so obviously if an out is folded that makes a big difference, but it also alters the stat when a non-out is folded (because it reduces the bottom half of the fraction). So if you are knocking out the folded outs, you should also adjust for the folded non-outs.

So i think it's better to present it just as the open cards on the felt suggest. But I think it's probably best to then have the commentator say '%age says this, but what Phil Hellmuth doesn't know is that both 8s were folded preflop, so he's really drawing dead.

On the re-entry tourney.

The 2nd bullet once you busted is an independent event. Your first is a sunk cost, factoring that into the equation is pointless. I agree with Adam 100% on his analysis.

Re: PokerCast Episode 186 - Tony Dunst, Dan Gati & WCOOP Preview

On the WSOP main event approximation of 15k, I think that number is way off. They are so deep at the beginning and play so few levels, that not much of the field is elimated.

Looking at this years tourney (from PokerNews):

Started: 6865
Made Day 2: 4521
Made Day 2 %: 65.9%
Didn't make Day 2: 2344

Now lets be very generous and say 50% of the people that bust out will play one other day (I personally think 50% is high (especially since some will bust on the 4th day and can't re-enter), but some people will play 3 extra days, so maybe it balances out)

That would only add another 1200 people and make the event have ~8k entrants based on this years field.

15k is an lol-bad estimate.

pope is right, the uber-slow structure of the main event makes it hard to reach that kind of number...but I do think there would be a few sickos that would actually re-enter 2 or 3 times in attempts to build a big stack on Day 1.

It would for sure make it even more top heavy with pros, making it a slightly more difficult tourney.

This has been discussed at great length already, but in regards to Jungleman: I can't really feel too bad for him imho. If he does have 6m locked up on FTP, I think it's just stupid. Even at the stakes that he plays, keeping upwards of 6m sitting in your online account in this climate is ridiculously irresponsible and laughable. He is also responsible for his own actions regarding the girah scandal. I don't think he was a huge conspirator by any means, but just oblivious. And finally, the relocating issues are also a result of just not thinking and being unaware.

I really wanted to think JM was just a victim in all of the girah stuff, but after the interviews I have such a tainted view and can't see how his judgement can be trusted.

Re: PokerCast Episode 186 - Tony Dunst, Dan Gati & WCOOP Preview

People thinking percentages are static and that number of outs should always be around be a set percentage are the reason why Stud games are so profitable - discards matter!

I don't know how it can be conveyed easily, but fixing outs to percentages actually could be doing a disservice rather than being an educational tool. But I do grant I might be in the minority viewpoint there.
