Episode #486 - January 2nd, 2018

Live from the Two Plus Two Studios - On this episode of the Pokercast: Disclaimer - This episode contains very little poker content, that being said, there is a whole lot to catch you up on!

To begin we have some very sad news about a former member of the Pokercast that long time listeners will remember. James Bunner left us over the holidays after a long and difficult battle with mental illness, Adam and Terrence share their thoughts and pay their respects before we get in to the rest of the pod.

First off, the baby is here! Terrence talks about the experience of the birth of his first-born, what that day was like and how his perspective has changed over the past week. We then move on to the weight bet. Adam had his first weigh in last night and had to sweat it out in the sauna, Adam and T talk about the drama that unfolded trying to make weight yesterday after the last 8 months. We will be back (hopefully) with Phil Galfond and more Poker news & content later in the week!

Aaaaah, sad about Bunner. If memory serves, he was the one who actually recorded the "hit him in the face" moment, correct?

Most sincere condolences to Adam, Terrence, Ross and all of Bunner's family and friends.

This really breaks my heart to hear about Bunner. I don’t know what his personal situation was but Wasn’t there anyone close to him that could have done anything?

RIP Bunner - it was always funner.

And sincere condolences to his family and his friends on the show

First show I can remember that I finished within 6 hours of it being released.

Gah. Major bummer. I have many fun memories of the good times, and fortunately just a few when it wasn’t. Sad. RIP

I was so happy when I saw Adam's video and then I read this. And now I'm so sad.

Adam - I imagine its all so bittersweet for you now with the loss of Bunner, who always made me laugh, especially the way he always tilted off his life roll.

I am so sorry for your loss.

I have some understanding of mental illness and unfortunately had to witness some of Bunner's over the line insanity.

I choose to remember the Funner mode -- the kid called me "renopops" and kept trying to get me to adopt him.

Here's a couple pics: (Can't find the one where we were celebrating Aussie Millions FT and Bunner managed to volunteer to be the guy tied to the chair for the bachelorette party-goers to grind on, heh.)

Yeah, me too... decided to move it up in the listening queue. Playing now.

Congrats to Team Chan on the birth of the future UFC 632 champion.

I was hoping this was a morbid joke like the RIP Doyle thing. So sorry to lose a member of the Pokercast family.

Terrence seems really into being a dad which is great for him and for baby T

I was thinking about a couple of things to do with the weight loss segment.

1). I don't agree that anyone can do it if Adam can. He's in the privileged position of being able to give the time and money needed to go the distance. A single mother who has to work 2 jobs to pay the rent isn't going to be able to spend the day at a sauna, be allowed the required toilet breaks to water load or even have the time to get to the gym regularly.

2). I would personally have to be offered a lot more than $25k to lose 77lb in 10 months. (Not because I'm rich but because I'm currently 175lb and 6ft 4)

Memories about Bunner:

He didn't speak on the podcast as much as Ross but when he said something it was always funny. I remember him talking about someone who had all him money in an enormous gold chain and how it was ridiculous that you couldn't have your earbuds in during announcements on a flight "If there was an emergency you'd expect there to be some visual cues to tip you off".

It's sort of incredible the amount of important stuff that's happened in a week in Pokercast land

I agree xander. Yes Adam has responsibilities of taking care of his kids (hockey practice) and work, but as far as I know, his work is very flexible. Having a 9-5 and then regular chores around the house helping out a spouse and kids makes it much more difficult.

Maybe this is my faulty memory (I don't listen to the show after), but I thought Adam was clear that "it" =/= "losing 70 lbs."

At the risk of speaking on behalf of my estimable cohost, I interpreted "it" as simply making a change for the better in one's own life and habits, especially wrt health, nutrition, and fitness. While the canonical single mother working two jobs is certainly going to have a much harder time with this, there's a lot to be said for goal-setting with improvement at the margins.

Really sad to hear about Bunner. I sorely missed him when he left the Pokercast; I started listening to the Holy Trinity of Bunner/Mike/Adam way back in 2006 or something.

Sorry to hear you guys had a tough time of it with him towards the end but I'm glad you've got a whole mess of good memories to focus on.

Guys, deepest condolences for the loss of your friend.

TChan, welcome to the parent club. Enjoy the ride. Sounds like you have a great start, a great attitude, and a great partner for it.

Adam, congratulations on week 1. You've got this.

A random thought came to me earlier today about a previous Pokercast.

Adam had to eat some amount of huge cupcakes throughout the show. He didn't come close to doing it and his excuse was that they were day-olds instead of fresh.

Bunner had the idea to peel all the icing off them, eat the cake and then eat all the icing at once at the end.

How times have changed
