Pokercast 475 - JC Alvarado

Episode #475 - September 28th, 2017

Live from the Two Plus Two Studios - On this episode of the Pokercast - JC Alvarado talks to us about living through the earthquake in Mexico City and the wonderful relief effort put forwards by the poker community. To begin, Adam tried fasting and twitter doubles it’s character count.
In the news: We’ve got a new WCOOP champion and the guy is a bit of a wild man, plus two high stakes bosses get heads up in the high roller. Our guest is JC Alvarado, JC has appeared on the Pokercast a few times but not for any reason as serious as an earthquake. JC lives in Mexico City and experienced the earthquake there to the full extent, and explains what that was like. He also was backed by the poker community in wonderful fashion, as well as local friends to go out and help surrounding communities with survival gear. JC joins us from his home and tells us what we can do to help and we also talk about his poker plans after this life changing event.
We tackle a few items from the Mailbag as well including a hand with 4 flushes and a tournament with an illogical rebuy structure.

Re: Pokercast 475 - JC Alvarado

Oddly enough, I'm interested in the triple draw hands. I seem to recall the two of you a while back chirping about people that fold in the first round and as such not understanding the game. When I heard this all I could think of was when I played 27 triple draw i was folding KQ, hell any broadway cards immediately.

(If I've got the wrong game here allow me the option of channeling SNL's Gilda Radner and leave you with a "Nevermind".)

Love the more consistent podcast. Looking forward to more poker focused discussion and a few of Terrance's hands. My vote is to go through all different game types.

By "first round," I assume you mean after the first draw?

I'm pretty sure I've done that. e.g. raise late with something along the lines of 8-5-2, get called by multiple players, brick on both cards, then suddenly see a raising war in front of me. Maybe that's being nitty, but it doesn't seem like an unreasonable thing to do, unless you're at a table with a maniac who will overplay some rough made hands. (That happened quite a bit in the low-stakes TDL games on Stars right before Black Friday. Rather amusing to watch.)

Then again, perhaps you misheard them or I'm misunderstanding you.

I like the episode dedicated to "strategy" trying to do all of T's hands.

Debating an over/under time for T for give up on homesteading, but I think the recent events in Vegas may have had an effect. My initial opening over under was ~18 months.

Three broadway cards and a nine trey and I'm even folding before the first round nine times out of ten when out of position.

According to PokerNews: "Because you get three chances to draw in 2-7 triple draw, beginning players often think you can open up your starting-hand ranges under the false impression it's easy to improve with three chances to do so. If you come out guns blazing and playing a lot of hands, especially in tournaments where chips are so valuable, you'll soon realize that this isn't the way to go."

I'm folding that in almost any position. (Edit: I suppose I might rip in a really weak game where the opponents all but telegraph their cards.)

This is why I'm confused by "I seem to recall the two of you a while back chirping about people that fold in the first round and as such not understanding the game."

Even a total beginner would know that folding preflop does not constitute a misunderstanding of the TDL.

I would enjoy a strategy episode going over all Ts hands.
