Pokercast 465 - Matt Glantz, Dog Days of Summer & Is WSOP looking out for us?

Episode #465 - June 29th, 2017

Live from the Two Plus Two Studios - This week on the Pokercast: Right off the top of the show Matt Glantz joins us. We talk about some concerns with the WSOP and the late series/pre main event grind. Then a certain host of this show has some pretty big news and another host is starting to see those sweet, sweet free roll dollar signs as well as an obituary to an ice guardian.
In the news: Many poker bracelets have been awarded and we update you on the most relevant ones. A fight involving Phil Ivey’s bodyguard, “Aussie” Matt Kirk is suing Leon T. of Kings casino over $3M unpaid gambling debt. Plus a story of an undeserving penalty in the Marathon WSOP event inspires an ethics/angling question from Terrence. Again this week we also have world series themed 140 or less and Mail. Topics covered this week are creating your own perfect tournament, WSOP dealers and PLO Strategy!

Don't want to spoil the surprise for people, so I'll just say well played, mystery PokerCast team member.

@TC, it was important for me *not* to know gender, but this is merely the first of about 1,000,000,000,000 things that you will instinctively want to crowdsource (just going on listening you for about 300+ hours).

You can't.

You can only parent the child that is in front of you. Experiences by other parents with other children can be informative, terrifying, or amusing. But all you can do is make the best choice you can, in the moment, with the kid facing you.

You will make good choices. And you will make bad choices. Parenting isn't about perfection, it's about modeling behavior, struggling through the bad times, and celebrating the good times--small and large. And then it's about kicking them the **** out of the house so they can go fly on their won.

Roots and wings, baby, roots and wings.

I also don't understand people that don't find out the gender as early as possible. You have so much planning to do. The most obvious is all the clothes you have to buy. You need to paint/decorate the babies room and you need to know whether to get butterflies or boats. And on and on...
Also, it kept tilting me during the Matt Glantz interview when Matt and Adam kept saying Harrah's instead of Caesar's.

Why do you need to force gender stereotypes to a new child from the beginning? Can't it just be neutral so knowing doesn't matter? That's what we did with our daughter.

Love it.

I'm not anywhere close to having kids, but if I had my way, old-fashioned types would assume I was having a boy because it would be very sports-oriented. However, it would be a function of having spent almost my entire professional life in women's sports.

I love TC but I totally don't see how his situation was even remotely an angle. The guy simply declared his 2 cards.

What would he prefer at showdown?
"Ace"
"Me too. Ace - two."
Terrence waits for villain to declare his kicker
"Ace- six"
"OK, chop it up"

Villain's immediate declaration removed the first 3 lines in the above dialogue. Makes no sense as an angle because he had only 4/12 chance of TC having a worse kicker.

Re: Pokercast 465 - Matt Glantz, Dog Days of Summer & Is WSOP looking out for us?

I was glad to hear the topic of the cards brought up.
The cards are horrible. Constantly getting cards replaced in between deals. In the $1500 mixed O8 i got moved to a a table and a few of my cards were marked. I mentioned this to the dealer and he said "almost all of the cards are marked". I asked him to call floor. I asked to get us new deck and the said they are working on it, it never happened.
This is unacceptable to me. We wouldnt use a deck like that in a drunken home game. As an amature player throwing down as much money as the buyins are, you should at least feel like everything is on the up and up.
I am sure most of the dings were accidental but if there is an edge to be had you know someone will take it.
The 10k plo8 i played had different cards. IMO that is like a F*** you to the players in smaller tourneys.

I think that T would rather him say "Ace no kicker"

Congrats TC. Prefer for your life to be over.

I wanted the in the moment sweat, so we didn't find out the sex of our first. We're having a second in November, and we did find out this time - I'd marginally prefer not to know, but I think my wife wanted to know because she wants a daughter and wanted the certainty one way or another. I think Terrance' argument does make some sense, but basically you do what you want. Why overthink it.

Our son was, like Adam's daughter, also born by emergency caesarean, and my take is a) you're never ready, and b) it's not real until the baby is out and screaming.

On names, we had a shortlist, but then picked something off-menu once he was born, because he just didn't look like any of the names we'd picked.

If we pick names based upon a newborn's looks the world would be full of Winstons.

As for gender assignment, we raised our daughter in a fashion that would preclude culturally engendered expectations. Much to our chagrin her bedroom was full of Barbies before she turned six. Then again, by twenty-six she was a certified mechanical engineer. Go figure.

Hey TC

Regarding children, I never knew in advance for either of them. I prefer to have the surprise. My first was a girl, even though I probably wanted a boy, because boys are easier (right?), but she is amazing and I never knew kids would be so fulfilling. Then 4 years later I got a boy and he's very cheeky. Knowing the sex ahead of time is just rabbit hunting....

You need to be prepared for all your life achievements to pale in comparison to having children. No amount of first places or victories in the cage will even come close.

Re: Pokercast 465 - Matt Glantz, Dog Days of Summer & Is WSOP looking out for us?

I've only ever heard 1 decent argument against finding out the gender. A couple had a miscarriage and then decided not to find out the gender the next time they got pregnant. The reasoning was that they didn't want to personify the pregnancy too much and if tragedy struck again then it would be slightly easier to get over.

Aside from that why wouldn't you want to find out? Are you worried that without this surprise that the big day will be boring and uneventful?

Why do people not peek at their Christmas presents on Christmas Eve?

I'm a bit bemused at the need to get all logical about knowing/not knowing. Some people want to know, others don't.

I thought everyone wants to know the sex early so they can paint the nursery the right colour.

If it's a boy, call him Chris and bring him up Buddhist. It'll confuse the hell out of everyone.
